We concluded our first topic this week, and overall students did a great job on their final test! They should have brought them home for you to see on Thursday. If a student did not receive a 4, they are more than welcome to retake the test, they just need to let me know in order to get a test retake form for you to sign.
Our next unit is Topic 2: Add and Subtract Decimals to the Hundredths. The following subtopics will be covered:

ELA
For reading we are wrapping up our unit on point of view and perspectives. We will test on Tuesday. Our next unit will be first and secondhand accounts.
For writing, we are having fun with descriptive writing these next couple weeks. The kids wrote about a monster they created and had to see if someone could draw a replica based on their words. Some did really well and other maybe saw areas that they could improve on with description. Our next piece will be listing a haunted house to sell. They will describe three areas in detail to give readers a clear picture of their listing.
For homework, the kids will have a nightly requirement of reading for 30 minutes. I was informed by many kids that they are not reading at home. This is currently all I am giving as an expectation from them. Now that we are down to our last 2 weeks to get AR completed for this quarter, they are panicking. AR is an expectation that they will have all through middle school, so developing these habits and fulfilling requirements is good to figure out now as they approach actual letter grades.
Science
- Observable, testable and measurable properties (senses, conductivity, solubility, magnetism, volume, mass, weight, temperature)
- Modeling matter (atoms, molecules, compounds)
This is part 1 of 2 for our study of matter. We will most likely test on this part at the end of next week, further details will be sent home.
Social Studies
For social studies, we are in our geography unit. The kids have tested on oceans and continents and did really well as a whole! I am impressed with their study skills with this. Memorization can be very hard to some. Our first region is the southwest region. I am planning to test this on Tuesday since it is only four states and capitals. The states are Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma. Some helpful sites are sheppardsoftware.com and stack the states. A fun song for the kids to listen to as well is Tour the States on Youtube: https://youtu.be/_E2CNZIlVIg
