The Second Grade Scoop
February 3rd, 2017
Hello Second Grade Families,
Well there are six more weeks of Winter ahead of us according to the groundhog. The second graders and I are hoping he is wrong. We are itching for some Spring weather. This week in 2R we reviewed authors' purposes and we have been working hard on addition and subtraction strategies in Math. It has been nice to see the students become more comfortable working with numbers mentally.
We ended our week with some Show & Tell fun and we even baked some pies. Well... pretend pies. Thank you to everyone who sent in soup cans for Tatem's Souperbowl Fundraiser. It was a huge success. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Valentine's Day Cards
As Valentine's Day is quickly approaching, the students are already beginning to buzz about exchanging cards. If your child is planning on exchanging cards (optional,) please be sure to send a card for each student in the class on Friday, 2/14 to avoid any hurt feelings. There are 20 students in 2R. Please click the link for the class list in case your child would like to address each card. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Looking forward to a fun-filled celebration!
Math
At home, please continue to...
- Practice basic addition and subtraction math facts.
- Bring your child's attention to money in their daily lives. Let them help you pay at stores or play store at home.
- Assist your child with homework and let me know if anything is very tricky for them so I can check in with them more often during the lesson.
Reader's Workshop
On Friday, we made PIE to help us remember that an author's purpose is to Persuade, Inform or Entertain. The students put on their aprons and began looking through Scholastic catalogues for books that fit each category. They cut the books out and then placed them onto the appropriate pie plate. It was a fun way to review!
Writer's Workshop
On Wednesday, our classroom was transformed into a writing museum. The students were placed into groups. Half the class acted as "museum exhibit hosts" and the other half acted as "museum guests." The guests walked around to the different exhibit hosts to hear about their stories. Then, we switched groups. It was a great way for the students to celebrate each other's hard work!
On Thursday, we kicked off our next unit which is called Writing About Reading. Students started this unit by writing letters to a friend or family member about their favorite story character.

If our class places $50 worth of orders all together, we will earn $10 in free books. With each order placed, our class also earns bonus points that I can then use to purchase more books for the classroom or even other materials like math manipulative for the classroom.
