Tree Project
Halea Humke Baylee Burgess Brooke Brannan
Eastern Red Cedar
growth rate- medium grow speed, grows from 30-80 feet, 12-24 inches per year
region where it grows- most of the eastern part of the united states like in texas, canada, and florida
climate it grows in- it can grow in extreme climax conditions ranging from very low temperatures (40-68) to high temperatures (90-105)
life span- about 150 years
leaves- opposite pairs, overlapping one another arranged on flat twigs
produce- cones and white berries
reproduction method- the pine cones grow on the red cedar, fall off and eventually will grow into more trees.
MORE INFO.-
what organisms are dependent on the tree? cones are eaten by many birds and animals including robins, cedar waxwings, northern bobwhite, turkey, starling, mourning dove, northern mockingbird, purple finch, american crow, rabbits, foxes, and squirrels.
limiting factores preventing the tree from growing, reproducing, and surviving? People destroy the trees by ripping off the leaves, construction, pollution, slants making the water run down and the soil can soak up the water.
what parasites affect it? bagworm, many fungi especially polypore
what abiotic factors does it need for survival? Why? Air, sun, water, soil, to help it grow and be healthy. It needs those things to survive.
Short term- air, shade, makes environment look good, fills up space
Long term- reproduction, causes more plants, attracts more animals
roll in the ecosystem- producer- produces food for other animals
effects on the ecosystem- food and shade for animals
Southern Magnolia
growth rate- medium grow speed, grows from 60-80 feet, 12 inches or less per year
region where it grows- most of the Southern part of the united states. Generally along the coastlines.
climate it grows in- it can grow in extreme climax conditions ranging from very low temperatures (40-68) to high temperatures (90-105)
life span- 80-120 years
leaves- Broad leaf, evergreen, 5-10" long, and leathery.
produce- Big, white, creamy flowers.
reproduction method- the flowers producing the seeds fall down onto the ground and then water (rain) sinks them into the soil and then they grow.
MORE INFO.-
what organisms are dependent on the tree? The flowers attract songbirds, the branches provide shelter for migrating birds flying past, and Beetles sometimes use parts of the tree as food.
limiting factores preventing the tree from growing, reproducing, and surviving? People destroy the trees by ripping off the leaves, construction, pollution, slants making the water run down and the soil can soak up the water.
what parasites affect it? fungus, spider mites, and different types of algae.
what abiotic factors does it need for survival?
LIVE OAK
Common Name- Live Oak
growth rate- 2-2.5 ft. per year/ moderately fast growing but slows with age
region where it grows- Southeastern
life span- 200+ years
leaves- 4"-8" long green leaves. The leaves are slightly rolled on the underneath. The upper part of the leaf is stiff, narrow, shiny and dark.
produce- Sweet edible acorns, male flowers called "catkins" that bloom in clusters.
reproduction method- thorough acorns. you would have to replant the acorns from the trees and they will start growing above ground. for survival, protect acorns underground in a milk container so they won't rot and animals won't get them.
MORE INFO.-
what organisms are dependent on the tree? Jays, quail, Deer, Wild Turkey, Raccoons, Grey Fox, Elk and Birds.
limiting factors preventing the tree from growing, reproducing, and surviving? People can rip leaves off, pollution, and saltwater will stop it from growing.
what parasites affect it? fungus, parasitic algae, oak wilt, and mistletoe disease.
what abiotic factors does it need for survival? Why? Air, sun, water, soil, to help it grow and be healthy. It needs those things to survive.
Short term- shade, looks good,
Long term- reproduction, animal life attracted
roll in the ecosystem- producer
effects on the ecosystem- producers food and shelter for animals and humans.
Texas Red Oak
Common Name- Texas Red Oak
growth rate- 80 ft. tall fast speed
region where it grows-southern united states and western united states
life span- 100-300 years
leaves- alternately arranged, simple leaf type, green leaves that turn to red and orange in fall, blade length 4-8 inches, oval leaf, brown flowers, round fruit shape, dry or hard fruit covering.
produce- acorns, reddish brown flowers,/catkins
reproduction method- needs hours of sunlight when growing, acorns fall off and create new trees
MORE INFO.-
what organisms are dependent on the tree? squirrels , raccoons, pigeons, nesting birds
limiting factors preventing the tree from growing, reproducing, and surviving? People can rip leaves off, pollution,
what parasites affect it? oak wilt, cera tocystis, fagacearum fungi
what abiotic factors does it need for survival? Why? Air, sun, water, soil, to help it grow and be healthy. It needs those things to survive.
Short term- shade, looks good, food for animals
Long term- more animal attractions, more plants
roll in the ecosystem- producer
effects on the ecosystem- produces food and shelter for animals
