The Second Grade Scoop
December 2nd, 2016
Hello Second Grade Families,
Can you believe it is December already? The students have been working really hard on their behavior since we've gotten back from Thanksgiving break. We read the book My Mouth Is A Volcano, which inspired the class to track how long we can go during a lesson without any calling out. So far, we are up to 35 minutes!
Reminders:
Monday 12/5: Pajama Day
Friday 12/12: Report Cards Go Live On Genesis
Wednesday 12/14: Half Day, Parent-Teacher Conferences
Thursday 12/15: Full Day, Parent-Teacher Conferences
Friday 12/16: No School, Parent-Teacher Conferences
Monday 12/19: Half Day, Parent-Teacher Conferences
Have a great weekend!

Order Due Date - Sunday, December 25th
Our first Scholastic orders were delivered Friday afternoon so the students who ordered will have a fun surprise waiting for them on Monday. Scholastic Reading Club catalogues for December will be sent home on Monday. Please take a few moments to explore the selection together and let your child help choose books he or she is excited to read.
For a wide selection of quality children's books that are just right for your child's reading level, please order online at scholastic.com/readingclub.
If our class places $50 worth of orders all together, we will earn $10 in free books. With each order placed, our class also earns bonus points that I can then use to purchase more books for the classroom or even other materials like math manipulative for the classroom. It is a great program to get involved in. Thank you for supporting your child’s reading both at home and in the classroom!

Math
Be sure to check out the Everyday Mathematics website if you would like your child to practice these skills at home. Fact Workshop and Top It are great games on there to practice these skills.
Reader's Workshop
Our next unit, which we began on Friday, is on identifying the main idea and details in a text. We discussed that the main idea is like a whole pizza, while the details are like the toppings. The details add flavor to the story and make it more enjoyable for the readers.
On Friday, the students acted as detectives to examine a Main Idea Mystery Bag. The mystery bag contained four photographs. The photographs acted as our details and the students had to determine what the main idea was based off of the photos.
Writer's Workshop
Science
The students also examined our cucumber plants which have been growing in test tubes for several weeks now. We noticed that the ones growing in humus were the most successful. Our next unit will be on changes! Our first lesson will focus on how a solid and liquid can change.
