Hillcrest Newsletter
From the Principal; January 5, 2023
Dear Hillcrest Families
Welcome to 2023! We hope you all had a relaxing and rejuvenating winter break with lots of time to drink hot chocolate and to connect with friends and family near and far.
As we ring in the New Year it is an exciting time to reflect on our accomplishments and review goals for what we have left to do in this school year. I don't know about you, but it is hard to believe we are halfway through this school year.
The work that is required of the school, the teachers, the students and their families has increased significantly during these past few years. We are all working hard to meet the challenges and to prepare students for the future. We know we are able to do hard things well at Hillcrest!
Karen Casey, an author (and former elementary school teachers) says “One part at a time, one day at a time, we can accomplish any goal we set for ourselves.” We will be helping students look at their mid-year progress, breaking what they have left to do into manageable pieces, and rolling up our sleeves to help students meet their goals.
We have so many exciting opportunities happening in the coming months. Please visit the district and school websites and Hillcrest's Facebook page often. We are definitely moving full steam ahead for the last half of this year.
If you have questions, comments, or concerns, feel free to contact me by calling 541-756-8348 or sending an e-mail to sfletcher@nbend.k12.or.us . Thank you, Hillcrest families!

Attendance Matters Now More than Ever!
Did You Know?
- Starting in preschool and kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
- Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year, can make it harder to learn to read.
- Students can still fall behind if they miss just 1 or 2 days every few weeks.
- Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
- Absences and tardiness can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
What Can You Do?
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
- Do your best to keep your child healthy.
- Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor or another parent.
- Try to schedule medical appointments and extended trips when school isn't in session.
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, the principal and other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
- If your child must stay home due to illness, ask the teacher for resources and ideas to continue learning at home.
Canned Food Drive - WHAT AMAZING SUPPORT!
We could not have done the Canned Food Drive without the support of our fifth grade teachers and some of our fifth grade students! 5th graders collected cans each morning and kept tallies. On December 16th, our 5th grade leaders helped volunteers from the Coast Guard to load up all donations! Thank you teachers, students, Coast Guard volunteers, and families! Well done!
Our December Assembly was FUN!
