Message from Ms. Rivera

We have finally arrived at the May edition of the 2020-2021 school year, and what a trip it has been! I feel like we should have shirts that say "I survived the pandemic school year!" This year has been a whirlwind, and I cannot thank you enough for your help at home, for your flexibility, and for your understanding as we have experienced so many changes this past year. Your support has made our jobs easier, and we really appreciate you!

Speaking of appreciation, this week is Teacher Appreciation Week! This week is so fun because we get to celebrate our teachers and paraprofessionals who have worked so hard to get our kids caught up so that they can be successful despite the obstacles they have faced this year. I get emotional when I think about what our teachers have had to overcome and how they have had to adapt. Despite everything, they have still shown up each day with a smile and with an urgency to not only teach our kids, but to allow them to feel loved and empowered. Our teaching staff is incredible! Please join me in celebrating them this week!

Please reach out to me if you have any questions or feedback, visit our website, and follow us on Twitter @CedricSmithElem.

Magnolia I.S.D. Student of the Month - Indus Singaraju

We are excited to announce that fourth grader, Indus Singaraju, has been selected as the Student of the Month for Magnolia I.S.D. Indus has attended Smith Elementary since kindergarten, and he is a shining example of the character traits that we value.

Indus was once described by a substitute teacher as the nicest child she had ever met, and he is a friend to all, he is so polite and helpful, and he tries his best at every task. Indus enjoys reading and riding his bike, and he hopes to attend Harvard Law School to become a lawyer. Indus said his favorite thing about Smith Elementary is the kindness of everyone here, and his advice to everyone is to always work hard. Congratulations, Indus!

Teacher of the Month - Daysi Hidalgo

Each month we hinor a teacher who has displayed leadership, instructional excellence, and positivity. Our MayTeacher of the Month is bilingual pre-kindergarten teacher, Daysi Hidalgo.

Ms. Hidalgo has been with the district for 15 years, and she has taught first grade and Pre-K at Smith. Ms. Hidalgo has the highest expectations for her students, and their behavior and the way they manage themselves could match even a fourth grade class. She has so much structure in her classroom that her students have grown by leaps and bounds. In addition, she is a leader on her team, and she helps guide her colleagues to share strategies, reflect on their practices, and do whatever they can to support our youngest learners.

Thank you, Ms. Hidalgo, for showing everyone that Pre-K students are just as capable as any of our students!
