Temporary Remote Learning Info
November 6, 2020
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):
Due to COVID-19 and Department of Health guidelines, students are restricted from coming to school for in-person instruction while awaiting clearance to return to school.
As you know, if a parent/guardian answers “yes” to any of the daily health screening questions that are sent to families each school day morning, or their child develops symptoms while at school, the child and their siblings will stay home from school until they are cleared by their healthcare provider to return to school.
Per NYS Department of Health, the daily health screener questions include:
- In the past 10 days, have any of your children tested positive for COVID-19?
- In the past 14 days, have any of your children been designated a contact of a person who tested positive for COVID-19?
- Do any of your children currently have (or have had in the last 10 days) a fever of 100.0°F or greater?
- Do any of your children currently have (or have had in the last 10 days) one or more of these new or worsening symptoms: feel feverish or have chills, cough, loss of taste or smell, fatigue/feeling of tiredness, sore throat, shortness of breath or trouble breathing, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain or body aches, headaches, nasal congestion/runny nose?
- In the past 14 days, have any of your children traveled internationally to a country included on the CDC Travel Advisory List or to a state or territory on the NYS Travel Advisory List?
If a parent/guardian answers “yes” to any of the above questions, temporary remote learning is an option that parents/guardians can request for their children. Temporary remote instruction is only an option due to COVID-related absences. If a child is absent from school for any other reason, traditional absence protocol applies.
Below are more details on how to request temporary remote learning for PK-12 students who await clearance to return to in-person instruction and what the expectations are for the day.
In order to be connected to remote learning, parents/guardians are asked to call the school by 8 a.m. the day of the absence to request remote learning for their child (ren). If a child is expected to be out for more than one day, the parent/guardian can request multiple days of remote learning at the time of the call. The office will then alert the child’s teachers that they will be remote for the day.
If a parent/guardian requests remote learning for their child after 8 a.m., we can provide remote learning beginning the following day.
Meals are also available for students who are remote on a temporary basis. When the parent/guardian calls the school to request remote learning for the day, they can also request meals. Meals will be available for pick-up between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. The parent/guardian will come to the main entrance and ring the intercom buzzer and the meal will be given to you.
The remote learning schedule for a child varies by grade level. In an effort to streamline things and provide families with one place where they can find the routine for each grade level, we have created a PK-12 list. Please know that daily attendance is taken for PK-12 students and period-by-period attendance is taken for 7-12 students. When your child is signed up for temporary remote learning, the teacher will expect them to be present for the entirety of the scheduled remote experience. If the plan changes the school needs to know as soon as possible so adjustments can be made.
Please follow the below schedule by grade level for your child to participate in temporary remote learning while waiting to be cleared to return to school.

Expectations for 7-12 Temporary Remote Students:
Please…
- Be on time for homeroom and for each class - attendance is taken at the start of class.
- Have your camera on while in the Google Meet.
- Participate and be prepared to respond when called on.
- Follow the Code of Conduct for appropriate classroom behavior, including no cell phone use during class.
- Check your email throughout the day.
- Stay logged into your Google Meet if you login and your class is not there. Your teacher will be with you as soon as possible. This means that something has come up that needs their immediate attention or there is a technical difficulty on our end. While you wait, check Google Classroom and your email, and use the time to work on any related coursework.
- If a technology issue occurs on the remote learner’s end, we ask that the remote learner reconnect to the Google Meet as quickly as possible. If that is not possible due to technical difficulties, please reach out to your teacher as soon as possible to check-in and catch up on what you missed via email and Google Classroom.
- Understand that there may be times when an alternative assignment needs to be assigned for remote learners (e.g. a lab requires a triple beam balance, Tech Ed project that requires a machine in the shop, etc.). This may be due to the nature of the course or pick-up of needed course materials.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me by email or phone.
Sincerely,
Ms. Noelle J. Short
Superintendent/Principal
