Remote Learning Update - 8.18.2020
At the end of today we will have completed the first five days of the school year. Teachers are reporting that they are impressed with you and your students flexibility and patience. There are a few things we are still trying to iron out. Read below for answers to some frequently asked questions:
1. When will the work get more rigorous AND why is the work so rigorous? I have received these questions (sometimes from different people in the span of 5 minutes). This is an adjustment and students and teachers will continue to find their groove. I encourage you to contact your student's counselor if the work is too little or too much so we can work with our teachers and you to make remote learning more reasonable for all.
2. Why does my child have to print out so many pages? They do not. Some teachers have assigned multi-page documents as support and others have done so as assignments. We have changed our internal expectations so teachers have been asked to limit the printing to two pages per week. Most assignments should be able to be submitted through Canvas or Google Drive. Large printing will be done by the school and will be available for pick up on Monday for the week. Teachers who utilize this feature will communicate to classes about this.
3. Does my student have to log in during the Bell Schedule? No. We follow an asynchronous learning model which means students have to engage with the material (to be counted present) by 11:59 pm. Periods 1, 3, 5, and 7, need to be engaged with on Red Days. Periods 2, 4, 6, and 8 need to be engaged with on Blue Days.
4. What does engagement mean? Engagement is the online equivalent of being present. Being present online means that the student logged on to Canvas AND accessed some work or some assignment. Accessed does not mean submitted. Basically the student is present if they log in and do something for each class. It is incredibly vague. What we are asking our teachers to do is have an attendance quiz each day the class is to meet. The quiz would simply be something along the lines of, "Are you present for (insert class name here)." The student would have one option - to answer yes. This will clear up some issues we are having with reports - and make it simpler for you and our teachers to know who is present and who is not.
5. How will grades work during remote learning? Grades and grading guidelines have not changed. Major grades, progress reports, eligibility is all still a part of high school.
6. Will it be safe for students to return on the 8th? And will student be able to change their designation or remote or in-person learning? I am very proud of what we are doing in terms of safety at our school. When children return they will be required to wear masks, we will have hand sanitizer stations and social distancing signage. The ramp up days will help students get a sense of what to expect when they return to in-person learning full time. I wish I could guarantee safety - I truly do - but I can guarantee procedures and protocols will be followed by staff and we will work with our students to make our campus as safe as possible.
You can change your designation to in-person or remote. Please contact your child's counselor to find out what the ramifications are of each.
7. What is the Ramp - Up plan? Oak Ridge High School is following the district ramp-up plan. We encourage parents to drive their children to school is possible - but transportation will be running. See this link for more details: RAMP UP PLAN
Next week I will give you a virtual tour of our campus and show you the protocols we have in place to make returning to school in-person as safe as possible.
