Working with Words at Home
These are great, fun ways to begin introducing or practicing sight words with a child. Sight words are some of the most common words found in books and have to be easily recognized.
- Grab a fly swatter and let’s get ready to learn those sight words! Write sight words on sticky notes or index cards. Then have your child "swat" each sight word with a fly swatter as you name it! This is a great, fun way to begin introducing or practicing sight words with a child.
- Alphabet magnets are a perfect tool to use to “stamp” down into play dough and practice spelling sight words.
Sight words are often called "popcorn words". Write sight words on yellow/white paper and ball it up just like popcorn. Have your child pick a piece of “popcorn” and read the sight word. If they read it correctly, they get to keep that piece of popcorn to add to their bowl or bucket. See who can fill their popcorn bucket first!
