OPPORTUNITIES
Research
Naturalistic Observation of Social Interactions (NOSI) Lab
Director: Matthias Mehl, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology
Job Title: Research Assistant (RA)
Commitment: Spring and Fall 2018 Semesters
Description:
This project studies the daily behaviors and social interactions of adolescents who have recently been hospitalized for suicidal thought or behavior. We do this using a naturalistic observation tool called the EAR (Electronically Activated Recorder), a device worn by participants that makes periodic audio recordings as participants go about their daily lives.
By sampling their daily behaviors and interactions, we are able to examine how things such as how family interactions and peer relationships influence resiliency in adolescents following a hospitalization for suicidality.
RA Responsibilities:
· Transcribing and coding recorded conversations
· Typically 9 hours per week (8 hours for coding and 1 hour for meeting)
· Attending weekly lab meetings during which we discuss what we’re learning from this project as well as relevant research.
· Writing a two-page essay at the end of the semester providing insights of what you have learned.
Qualifications:
· Reliable, responsible, and hard-working students who are interested in clinical and/or health psychology
· Pay attention to detail
· Spanish-speaking students are strongly encouraged to apply
Note:
Because of the necessary training, a two-semester commitment is required. These projects provide valuable first-hand research experience for students who are thinking about going to graduate school!
To Apply:
Please send a copy of your resume to Maximilian Lim at: maxlim1993@email.arizona.edu
Interviews will be conducted during the latter half of November to early December.
Internships
LifeSTEP (Life Skills Training and Enhancement Program)
We are currently accepting applications for Spring semester. As a LifeSTEP (Life Skills Training and Enhancement Program) intern, you would be meeting with your assigned youth about once a week for about 4 hours each time. Activities might include going to the movies, getting an ice cream, going bowling or spending time at a park, etc (you would be reimbursed for your expenses including gas).
You would receive 3 units of internship credit (393 or 493 depending on your U of A status), and you would have the opportunity to receive training in this area. If you are interested (and are at least 18 years old), please complete the attached application & email it back to Julie Feldman, Ph.D. julief@u.arizona.edu. We are especially in need of male interns (due to the large number of older boys in desperate need of a positive role model), but we are also in need of many female interns as well!
Apply HERE.
Participants Needed
The Wilson lab at the Department of Psychology is running a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study and I’m currently looking for participants.
Participants will participate in a 1 hour behavioral study that pays $10, and may be invited back for a 2 hour fMRI study that pays $40. In addition to earning some money, participants will get to experience an fMRI experiment and see images of their brains.
Interested participants can email eefmri@gmail.com for more information and to schedule a time.
Volunteers Needed
The Tucson Buddy Walk is an annual event sponsored by the Southern Arizona Network for Down Syndrome (SANDS). Hundreds of families attend the event to gather resources about Down syndrome (DS) and socialize with other families having individuals with DS.
The Buddy Walk will be held on Sunday, November 12th, 2017 from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the DeMeester Outdoor Performance Center in Reid Park. We are looking for dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers who will be able to help before, during, and/or after the event. Some of the areas where volunteers are needed include event/booth setup, registration, and silent auction, among others. You can volunteer individually or as a group for any amount of time.
If you are interested in volunteering please sign-up at HERE.
If you have any further questions or questions or concerns, please contact Karen Poppe at BuddyWalkTucson@gmail.com with the subject line as “Volunteer.”
Thank you so much and we look forward to seeing you at the event.
