Coordinator Corner: What Makes the MYP Different
Conceptual Teaching and Learning
Instead of focusing just on the content and facts of the subjects, teachers in the Middle Years Programme also focus on the concepts of what they are teaching and why it matters in the world.
Here are some examples:
- Students in US Government just finished a unit which traditionally focuses on the legislative branch of government. In the MYP model, teachers also asked students to explore the larger idea of "civic responsibilities as a means to create change".
- Currently in English 10, students are exploring the question "How do individuals’ search for human dignity reveal universal truths about human nature?" as they analyze various texts in the second quarter.
- Students in Geometry just finished exploring the question: "How can logic be used when formulating justifications?" in the first quarter.
We recognize that though there are facts students should know, it is just as important that students understand bigger ideas about how the world works and can apply facts and concepts to various situations.
In future issues, I will break down other components of what makes the MYP different. Below you can see the Middle Years Programme model which provides a visual of components of the programme.
