Be the Best YOU at Grandview!!!

Focus on the POSITIVE, especially when referring to behavior

Dear Families,

Our school is participating in an important building initiative. It is called Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS).

What is Positive Behavior Interventions and Support?

PBIS is a process for creating safer and more effective schools. It is a systems approach to enhancing the capacity of schools to educate all children by developing research-based, school-wide, and classroom behavior support systems. The process focuses on improving a school’s ability to teach and support positive behavior for all students. Rather than a prescribed program, PBIS provides systems for schools to design, implement, and evaluate effective school-wide, classroom, non-classroom, and student specific plans. PBIS includes school-wide procedures and processes intended for all students and all staff in all settings. PBIS is not a program or a curriculum. It is a team-based process for systemic problem solving, planning, and evaluation. It is an approach to creating a safe and productive learning environment where teachers can teach and all students can learn. At Grandview, we have already begun our initiatives and the Grandview staff feels our building is ready for the next step.

What is PBIS at our school?

We have adopted a unified acronym that will focus on the behaviors we want Grandview students to use in and out of school. This acronym defines our expectations for behavior in our school in all areas. You will see our acronym begin to be posted throughout the school and your child will be learning about these behaviors in many different ways. At Grandview, we have PRIDE. The high school has the same acronym, but at Grandview our letters stand for something a little different.

As part of our PBIS process, we will be focusing on a different letter about every 3 weeks. Stay tuned for our upcoming Mustang Messengers to hear what we are doing with each letter. Now that we know what behaviors we stand for and what behaviors our students will be carrying out, principal breakfasts will be back, compliment cards will be implemented, expectations in the different settings will be set, and in the end, Grandview will be a more positive school with children learning the soft skills necessary to be successful in life.

If you have questions about our model, please let us know. Grandview parent voice is so important to the success of this model. We hope that you bring this model into your home to ensure that the children are carrying out the behaviors of PRIDE both in and out of Grandview. Stay tuned for more information as our model and as learning develops!

Thank you for your continued support at home!

Your Proud Principal,

Melissa Carruth, Ed.S

Custody Information

Please notify the school office if there are changes to your child’s custody that restricts one biological parent’s access to school records or to the child. Parents must supply a copy of the court order that outlines the restrictions.

School Closing

There are lots of ways of finding out if school is closed.

  • Our local newscasters run a school's closing list. Clarenceville is listed under Oakland County. Click on Detroit ( or WXYZ ( are a few options both on-line and on the TV with the ticker.
  • Mr. Shepich sends out a robocall to families
  • I will tweet from @grandview elementary and make a post on Grandview's facebook page
  • Staff, nor the office, come in on these days, so no one will be at the office to answer the phone.

All students who have a language other than English spoken at home and are identified as English Learners must take a state test called WIDA ACCESS for ELLs (Accessing Comprehension and Communication in English State to State for English Language Learners). The Enrollment Office form that was completed when your son/daughter enrolled in Clarenceville Schools tells us this information. Students will take the test eve if they are not attending ESL/EL classes. The test is for Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking and Comprehension in English. Students will take the test between February 4-March 22, 2019. We will mail your child's test results to you when we receive them from the Michigan Department of Education. If you have any questions, please contact Karen Morrison at 248-919-0404.

Please do not send your child back to school the next day after being sent home with a fever. Your child has to be fever free for 24 hours in order to return to school.

After-School Event Guidelines

When there are events after school, please help to remind your child that even after school, there is a certain behavior to uphold. Kids should not be running up and down the hallways and screaming and yelling in the bathrooms and down the hallways. The students should take pride in their school whether it is during the school hours or after the school hours. Please help to support this. We need our students to be safe and school property respected .

We are starting WatchDOGS in the next 2 weeks. If you are interested in volunteering for this program, please contact the office or Ms. V, our Student Support Coach, at

Popcorn Day

In February, there is 1 popcorn day. The date is the 22nd.

Weather...Dress Appropriately

At Grandview, we go outside as long as it is above 10 degrees Fahrenheit. We combine the temperature and wind chill in making this decision. Therefore, we need the children to come prepared with hats, gloves, mittens, snow pants, winter coat and boots. If you have trouble providing your child with this necessary and essential winter gear, please reach out to us and we will help to support your child. If your child is not dressed appropriately, we will not be sending them outside. Additionally, if your child medical conditions that restricts them to be outside, please do not just send a note in from you. We need to have a medical note. Our office is becoming packed with kids that say, "my parents told me to stay in." We welcome them to stay in, but we need the medical note as we have kids that have medical restrictions and they do not have anywhere to sit due to the kids that do not have the medical note.

Also if there is snow on the ground and your child does not have boots or snow pants, then they will be asked to stay on the blacktop. In order to play in the snow, they will need boots and snow pants.

Pink Out Store

Team Gibson/Terpack still have the Pink Out Store opened. Suckers and other items will be sold to raise money for Karmanos Cancer Center. The store will be set up in the main hallway by the office and will be student run.

Reflection Room

Reflection room is up and running. Remember if your child is sent to the reflection room, a phone call is sent home to the parent. Though there are times, when your child just needs to go to that room to deescalate. Please note this room is NOT a detention or in-school suspension. It is a room where the kids reflect on their behavior and understand the impact their behavior has on others. Additionally, the kids partake in mindfulness and yoga activities. It helps to set the child up for success and focuses on the positive about fresh and new starts and repairing the relationships that need to be fixed. Thank you for your support!

Thank you to the 100 parents that have already completed the survey. Though I would love more results!! What we gain from the survey, helps to guide our work in the future. We have already looked at the feedback and results at the Principal Advisory Team to see what changes need to be made to our already amazing school. So if you have not had a chance to complete the survey, please consider taking time to fill it out.

We have had a lot of students arriving late. Tardies start at 8:40 and will be tracked. If your child comes in after the class did the lunch count, then they will automatically get PB&J as their lunch choice. Lunch counts will not be finalized until after 8:40. If you know your child is going to be late, then please call in the tardy and select your child's lunch choice to ensure that they can get another choice. Our lunch counts are becoming very lopsided and we need to ensure that the children are getting the choice that they signed up for. Also we need our students on time for school!!

Kroger and Grandview

We have collected $7.83 from August to October (we are newly established in Mid October so the collection is from half a month).

Bookflix for Grandview Families

The Michigan eLibrary did not renew their subscription to Bookflix. We found great value in this site for our children. Therefore, Grandview purchased a school subscription that allows teachers and students to use the following username and password to access Bookflix at home and at school. Please feel free to use this at home. The link is as follows.....

There is a link on the Library symbaloo and will be putting a link under the student links on the Clarenceville website.

Username: grandvw

Password: flix

If you click on the apple and book in the top right corner, it takes you to a Resources and Tools page where you can search for books, search by themes, running times and grade levels.

This is another way to engage your students with their learning at home.

Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts

Meetings are underway for both of these great organizations. Girl Scouts will be meeting on Wednesdays and Boy Scouts will be meeting on Mondays at 6:30. Come join the fun!

Transportation Changes

Do not rely on just the office for transportation changes. It is important that you also put it in writing in an email to the teacher. If you alert the teacher and the office, chances are better that the message is delivered accurately. We have so many transportation changes at the end of the day that makes us uneasy that a mistake could occur. Please do not make a change after 3:00!!

Job Opportunity

Substitute Noon Aides are needed. This job involves supervising children in the lunch room and on the playground from 11:30am-1:00pm. It is a great way to make money while working on your child's school schedule and it is FUN!!! Please stop in at the office to get an application if you are interested. You would need to be fingerprinted (approximately $70 cost) before working. Come and join the fun!!

Volunteering at School

If you are interested in volunteering at school you need to complete an iChat form (available in the office) and submit a copy of your driver’s license for a quick background check. Thank you! We love our Grandview Volunteers!
