On February 8th, our First Grade class will be celebrating “Compound Word Day”. We are learning about compound words and it is time to have some fun with them! To celebrate this day, please help your child choose at least 4 compound words to wear to school. You will be surprised at how many great things you have at home (sunglasses, earrings, necktie, sweatpants, handbag, even shirts with compound word pictures – like a shirt with a butterfly, football, or Batman on it!). Be creative!
Look for the sheet that your child must fill out with all of the compound words that he/she is wearing. Please complete this for homework! If you are unsure of whether or not a word is a compound word or need ideas , you can visit http://www.enchantedlearning.com/grammar/compoundwords/ for a quick and easy online list. Please fill out paper and return on February 8th.

HEALTH ROOM HAPPENINGS
Hello everyone! I just have a few reminders since we have been in school for almost ½ of the school year already.
Please remember that:
1. We need parent excuses for any absence or tardy. If your child has been out of school longer than 3 school days the district is requiring a Dr. note or excuse, if you have any questions please feel free to call or email myself or your student’s teacher.
2. Please remember, if your child has been running a temperature above 100 degrees, they must be fever free for at least 24 hours without the aid of Tylenol or Motrin before returning to school.
3. If your student has been vomiting please keep them at home until they have not vomited for 12 hours and have been able to keep food in their stomach.
4. Please remember that you should be aware that head lice do occur within the school setting the same as outside the school. If you have any questions regarding if your child has head lice, or treatment of it, please feel free to contact me.
5. FYI, at the present time we are seeing a stomach virus, respiratory virus with a high fever and the flu in the health room. I just like to let parents know, so you are aware.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 610-965-1587. Thank you for all you do and for sharing your children with us!

We will make a friendship fruit salad. If you would like to contribute a little something for our party, please sign up at www.SignUpGenius.com/go/20F0B45ABA62AAAFF2-valentines1 . A list of names is attached for our Valentine exchange. Please have your child address his or her own Valentine’s. Homemade, computer, or store bought cards are fine. Please write TO:… and From: with your name on each Valentine.

PLANT SEEDS OF KINDESS AND WATCH THE LOVE GROW!
February 12th to 18th is Random Acts of Kindness Week. Also, February 6th -10th is School Counselor’s Week. In honor of these two weeks we will be “Planting Seeds of Kindness and Love" by performing Random Acts of Kindness. What can you do to plant seeds of kindness? Make a card for a family member or friend, help mom and dad at home, hold open a door, give someone a compliment. Visit this website for ideas. http://www.randomactsofkindness.org/ Please look for a new sheet of kindness bubbles. Think of different ways to show kindness to your family and friends. Write a kind act in each bubble and then return to school.

Community Service Club will be collecting Pennies for Patients for the Leukemia Society in February. Save your Pennies!
Heart to Heart Bags
In honor of Random Acts of Kindness Week, I invite each of your to help “Plant Seeds of Kindness and Love” with a special project. In your folders you will find a Ziplock bag. Please fill the HEART TO HEART bag with a new or slightly used children’s book or 2, a juice box or water bottle and a small treat or two (granola bars, fun fruits, cookies, 100 calorie snacks). Feel free to also include a card. Please return by February 10th so we can distribute the bags to a daycare and help make another child’s day special and share the joy of reading. Please feel free to make more than one Ziplock bag. I thank you in advance for helping Plant seeds of kindness and love!
With Heartfelt Thanks!

How to Practice with your child...
Practice Sheets-When your child comes home with a practice sheet, have him/her erase any work from earlier that day. Then have him/her read each fact (not just the answer) aloud along with the answer. If you hear either the slightest hesitation or you child makes an error, give them extra practice by immediately giving your child the answer and asking him/her to repeat the problem and the answer again. Your child should then back up three problems and begin again. If there is no hesitation or mistake, be sure to praise your child. If you would like to have them practice writing the answers, wait at least an hour or try again in the morning. When working on memorizing facts, two short sessions with time in between is much more helpful than one very long session.
Flash Cards–When using flash cards with your child, use only 12 flash cards at a time (9 cards should be cards with facts that your child has already mastered. Brain research states that it is better to learn a small amount of new material mixed with a larger amount of mastered material. Cards are numbered at the bottom to let you know what order to switch new cards in. Start with the original 12. When your child is able to answer all 12 correctly in a cold read (the first time you practice), switch out #s 1-3 for #s 13-15. You will repeat this process each time switching out the oldest cards for newer ones as your child masters new facts. Do not rush to swap out cards, make sure your child has really mastered the facts. The old cards will go into a review deck which should be used every 4thtime you practice.
Spend about 2 to 3 minutes running through the cards. Your child should read each fact (not just the answer) aloud along with the answer. If you hear either the slightest hesitation or your child makes an error, give them extra practice by immediately giving your child the answer and asking him/her to repeat the problem and the answer again. Have your child repeat the fact and answer three more times. Put the card back three cards from the front so that your child has an opportunity to practice it again.
