Re: Parent/Guardian class for the GDL Law (Graduated Driver License Law) and any questions you have about Drivers Training.

Parent/Guardian class is scheduled for:

January 24, 2023

6:00 p.m.

The meeting will be held in the New York Mills High School media center

The Graduated Driver License Law (GDL) has been in effect since January 1, 2015.

Effective January 1, 2015, every driver under the age of 18 who completed behind the wheel instruction and is testing for a provisional driver’s license must submit a driving log showing the dates and lengths of drive time for each supervised trip. The supervised driving log must be signed by a parent or guardian.

  • You will receive a supervised driving log at the class to log hours driving.

  • You will receive a Certificate of Completion from the instructor at the class.

  • Students who are going to apply for farm work licenses must be able to verify 50 or 40 hours (15 at night) of driving time on the log at the time of the road test.

  • A reminder that the parent class may not be counted toward the required 30 hours of classroom time for the students if the students attend the class with their parents. The statute specifically states that the instructors for the parent class shall provide the required topics/information to the primary driving supervisor. (Only one parent/guardian needs to attend the class – it should be the primary driving supervisor).

  • I will answer any Drivers Training questions you have about classroom or Behind the Wheel training for your student.

If you have any questions, please call Doug Salo at (218) 639-0112

Thank You!

Snow Make-Up Days

The snow make-up days for 12/14 and 12/15 will be Feb. 20 and April 10. If there are future snow days, the NYM School will implement e-learning. Click the button below for our e-learning plan.

Note from the Health Office

It's cold & flu season. Let's keep our students healthy by having them get a good night's sleep, stay hydrated, practice good handwashing and stay home when sick.

Reminder: We are required to have proof of immunizations or have a notarized conscientious exemption form on file for your child. If you have been contacted by the Health Office, please send in your documentation.

Thank you!

Notice to Elementary Parents:

We have received several calls concerning the transportation of students to other locations or on other buses. In response to these questions, we wanted to communicate the NYM Elementary Transportation Practice:

  • Elementary students have one pickup and one drop-off.

  • The NYM Busses can NOT be used for sleepovers, birthday parties, and other events. Other transportation arrangements need to be made.

  • Exceptions:

    • Blended families, with joint custody

    • With a note, students are allowed to get off at a different established bus stop within the same bus route. This is an exception because that student is already counted on the bus, and thus will not cause overcrowding.

    • Emergencies

Reasons behind this practice:

  • This practice is the safest way the school can assure all students are dropped off at the correct location.

  • This practice allows us to limit bus overcrowding.

  • This practice limits the number of bus changes a day. Excessive numbers of bus changes have caused problems in the past.

  • This practice cuts down on confusion for bus drivers.

  • This practice has decreased behaviors and bullying on buses.

Notice from the Elementary Office:

If your child needs a change in their afterschool plan, a parent or guardian must call the office no later than 2:50 p.m. Changes that come in after 2:50 p.m. will not be guaranteed.

Notice: All Sports Questions go to Matt Radniecki

Notice: All sports questions should go to the NYM Athletic Director Matt Radniecki. Matt can be contacted via email at mradniecki@nymills.k12.mn.us
