Administrative Update

Hello Trailblazers Families!

I hope everyone is doing well and finding things to be thankful for everyday!

Can you believe we are closing out quarter two and entering quarter three this week? This academic year is moving quickly. As we prepare for quarter 3, please remember our 3R’s (Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to learn).

In celebration of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, let’s take this opportunity to discuss equity. Some may confuse equity with equality, and they are very different. Although both promote fairness, equality achieves this through treating everyone the same regardless of need, while equity achieves this through treating people differently depending on need.

At Discovery, we focus on equity because we understand our student’s and family needs differ. For example, our teachers make sure they reach every student at their learning ability by:

  • incorporating individualized academic instruction which includes reviewing and analyzing data at collaborative team meetings
  • being sensitive to everyone’s cultural background by attending LCPS Equity in the Center trainings
  • promoting daily social and emotional learning through classroom morning meetings.

Because of these practices, our trailblazers are learning life skills which include but are not limited to promoting equity among all students and staff and understanding how to advocate for themselves.

To continue these efforts at home please speak with your trailblazer about the following:

  1. The platinum rule: Treating people, the way they want to be treated. Understanding my individual tolerance may be different from someone else; therefore, I must treat them according to their abilities and strengths.
  2. Showing empathy instead of sympathy. Remembering how belittling feeling sorrow or pity for someone may be perceived, instead be a beacon of support.

As we start this week, please continue to have these discussions with your trailblazer. Until our next Dean’s Den, remember to be nicer than necessary because everyone is going through something and have a great day on purpose!

Your Dean,

Ashley L. Tyson
