Happy Spring!

A Message from Danielle Hartman, Supervisor of Instruction
Dear School Community:
BCIT is pleased to announce the addition of two new AP courses for the 2016-17 school year. Next year, in addition to our AP World History and AP Literature courses, we will be offering AP Chemistry and AP Language and Composition. Our new, innovative hybrid AP courses have recently been featured on the NJDOE Innovation website and will serve as a model for districts across the state.
These hybrid classes are a combination of traditional face-to-face classes and online, independent work. Students participate in a traditional class for the first semester; for marking period three, they complete an independent, online class. Marking period three consists of video chats where students record their discussions regarding independent work and weekly assignments, along with an independent research project. Chats are uploaded to Google Classroom for the teacher to review and provide feedback. Our goal is to extend the learning time for students to master the challenging content in preparation for college and AP exams.

A letter from the BCIT Adult Education Principal, Patrick Cruet
Dear BCIT Community Members,
BCIT’s Apprenticeship Program is the traditional employers' training program where an employer selects an unskilled person to be an Apprentice, and teaches on-the-job skills while he/she works. This progresses the Apprentice to a skilled mechanic/technician who can work alone and/or supervise others. The modern twist to the ancient practice of apprenticeship is the required classroom study, which BCIT provides.
Our Adult Education evening classes at BCIT compliment on-the-job training with classroom work covering the theory of the trade (math, safety, codes, etc.). The employer teaches what to do; we teach why.
Learn more about Apprenticeship opportunities by calling the County Apprenticeship Coordinator at 609-267-4226, ext. 8330. Earn while you learn!
Sincerely,
Patrick Cruet

Cosmetology Student: Mark Pyolypenko
Mark Pyolypenko, an Adult Education student, has finally found a career he truly loves! Cosmetology!
Mark was born in the Ukraine and moved to NJ in 2006 a the age of ten. He graduated from Millville High School in Cumberland County in 2014. Upon his high school graduation, he moved to Burlington County. Mark had the desire to continue his education and go to college as a psychology major. He attended Rowan College of Burlington County and after taking courses, he quickly realized that while he enjoyed psychology, this wasn’t the career choice he wanted to pursue. Mark did some searching and decided to attend BCIT. He loves to learn and gain hands-on experience from his two knowledgeable and experienced instructors, Mrs. Gardner and Mrs. McGinty.
Mark currently holds an “A” average in his course work, in which he is currently preparing for the cosmetology state boards exam in April. Upon completing his BCIT courses, Mark plans to join the workforce promptly as a cosmetologist.
Mark highly encourages anyone who may be interested in gaining a license in cosmetology to join us at one of our Career Exploration events to learn more.

CTE Spotlight: Heavy Equipment/Diesel Technology, by Danielle Hartman
“One Team, One Theme” is the slogan for BCIT Westampton’s Heavy Equipment/Diesel Technology class. Students in this class say that they are more than a class, they are a family. Teacher Rick Goatley agrees; he is more than an instructor, he is a friend and advocate. Both students concur that Mr. Goatley is the best part of Diesel class, adding that after exploring a number of options, they chose diesel because of the hands-on nature of the class and the infectious personality of the teacher.
Student Brandon Rutherford, class of 2017, has big plans for his future. He is applying to the University of NW Ohio to earn a degree in applied sciences in High Performance Motorsports. This program will allow him to continue his studies in tuning and building engines, while the school’s drag racing club will allow him to pursue his dream of racing. Eventually, Brandon wants to open a tuning shop for high performance vehicles. Classmate Edgar Zayas, also class of 2017, wishes to pursue admissions to the Air Force where he hopes to qualify for a position as a mechanic. Both boys are well on their way to successful careers in the automotive industry.
Students in Diesel can graduate high school with certifications in Student ASE 1-8, Valvoline Oil, and SP2s (Safety and Pollution). These certifications will tell employers that the students have experience in the field and are ready to begin assignments immediately. In addition, there are many options for a school-to-work experience that will provide students with an added leg up in the career field. Between the certifications and hands-on experience, any student who graduates from BCIT’s Heavy Equipment/Diesel Technology program is well prepared for whatever future lies ahead of him.

BCIT Foundation assists in funding two student-driven projects!
Westampton students Mike Dougherty and Mike Speaker worked with teacher Rick James to apply for Foundation funding. These students will lead next year’s project modeled after plumbing installation for apartments, involving students from the Plumbing and HVAC career majors. Costs will cover the sinks, pipes, drains, etc., and many of those items could be re-used for other projects.
The Apartment Plumbing application was one of 10 requests made to the Foundation. Trustees funded three requests and pledged to find funding for almost all the others, including this one.
