READING WITH YOUR CHILD - QUESTIONS TO INCREASE UNDERSTANDING (FICTION)
Asking your child questions about what he/she is reading not only deepens understanding of the book, but it also provides an opportunity for you to share in a conversation about current interests and understandings. Here are just a few ways to start talking:
- Why did you choose to read this book? Is it what you expected? What have you enjoyed most about the book?
- What do you think the author wants readers to remember most from this book?
- Was there one big lesson you took away from this book?
- Does this book remind you of another book you know? Does it remind you of something you’ve experienced in real life?
- Did any of the characters change through the story? Who changed, and how did they change?

CHARACTER FOCUS - OWNERSHIP
Ownership is our willingness to take responsibility for the choices we make. When we take responsibility for our choices, others know they can count on us and we earn their respect.
When we take ownership of everything we do and say and stop blaming things outside ourselves for situations that occur in our lives, we have greater control. We may not be able to control everything that happens in our lives but we can control how we respond to what happens. By taking ownership of our actions we create a huge shift in our life.
Ownership is a whole-life concept. We can take ownership of our education, our relationships, our fitness, our fun—all areas of our life. And when we take ownership we take pride and feel confident and fulfilled.

SPANISH TUTORS
One of the most common questions we get from English-speaking parents & Spanish speaking parents whose kids are in dual or even monolingual is, “What are some ways I can support my child in their Spanish skills when I don’t know Spanish very well myself?”
Though there are many ways to support their Spanish development (see this link for some quick & easy resources & this link for an English presentation on this topic from our Dual Language Parent Night), one of the most powerful ways is through the use of a Spanish tutor.
Are you looking for a tutor to help your student with Spanish? We get this request frequently from parents and we have a list of teachers who have shown interest in being Spanish tutors. The compensation and schedule are established between you and the teacher. Please contact your child's teacher or the school office for the names and email contacts for potential tutors.
FAMILY EVENTS CALENDAR
