Assignments for May 18-22
1. Opinion Writing
An opinion is a person’s thoughts or feelings about a topic. A fact is something that is true. We have been working on stating our opinion, providing reasoning, and sense of closure to express our thoughts. You have done a good job writing about a pet and responding to an ant sighting! Now it's time to share your thoughts about a book you have read.
During this quarantine, you have been doing a lot of reading at home. Think of a book that you have read that you think other students in class will enjoy. What reasons will you provide to support your classmate in reading this book?
What book would you recommend to a friend and why?
Be sure to include:
• State your opinion in the introduction (ex: A must read book is ___, ____ is a book that you should read because )
• At least 2 reasons
• A closing sentence (This is why I think you should read this book, _____ is a must read book., Do you think you will read _____?).
• All sentences must have starting capitals, spacing, and proper end punctuation. Lowercase letters should be used in all words, unless a capital is needed for a name, place or person.
ADJECTIVES
This week we also want to explore adjectives. Adjectives describe nouns (person, place, thing, or animal). Watch the video on the read aloud, If You were an Adjective" and then complete the activity below.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dj2VvyhA-8
- Find five items in your home. Put a piece of paper in front of each item and using the adjectives chart, write to describe each item. List 1-3 adjectives for each.
2. Sound
This week we will be starting a new science unit on light and sound! Throughout this unit, we will be learning how light and sound travel from objects to our eyes and ears. We want you to begin thinking like an engineer and in a few weeks, we will be asking you to design a device (similar to what we did at the start of the school year for our apples). Imagine that our class went into the woods on a little adventure and that we wanted to let your families know where we were. Can you think of a device that you could build that would send a signal using light or sound to show our location? Hmm...begin thinking, scientists!
For this week’s activity, we will just focus in on sound. Watch these two videos below to learn how sound travels and how vibrations cause sound.

2. https://youtu.be/3-xKZKxXuu0
After watching the video, choose 3 activities to complete:
1. Go on a listening walk. Record the sounds you hear by either making a video or writing it down.
2. See what sounds you can make! Look for objects around your house that you use make different sounds.
3. Write and draw something you learned about sound and vibrations from the videos.
4. Make a drum or guitar with objects around your house. See if you can create a vibration by playing your instrument.
5. Set up 5 glasses filled with different amounts of water. Use a metal spoon to tap each glass. Listen for each sound that is made. Then write or draw about your observations.
3. Geometry: Solid Figure Attributes
You have been doing a fabulous job as shape detectives and we are so pleased with all the plane shapes and solid figures you have found around your homes! This week, we want you to continue that great work by focusing in on the solid figures. Watch the video below, as Miss Long explains how we can really learn a lot about a shape by describing its attributes. Listen carefully as she teaches you about faces, edges, and vertices!
- After the video, find one object in your house for each type of solid figure.
- Use the chart to help you.
- Then, complete the chart by describing each shape’s attributes.
- Fill out the form in the attached "Attributes" document and email your completed work to your teacher!
