Week at a Glance
Marian Central Catholic High School Faculty Newsletter
October 21, 2017
Well, we made it through the first quarter.
For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me; when you seek me with all your heart...
~ Jeremiah 29:11-13
These students are certainly our hope and our future. We place our hearts and souls into teaching, mentoring, and guiding them all the while not sure what our Lord's plan is for them. All we know is that for this short glimpse; this brief moment in time, we have them... in our classroom, members of a club or team, sitting down talking with them one-to-one... and we will do everything in our power to make that time meaningful.
Believe that the relationships that you build with these students today will not be forgotten; instead they will become part of the fabric of these students' being... who they are and who they will become. We may not be recalled by name, but you have indeed touched their soul.
Thank you for all you do to support our students... during exam week and always.
Looking ahead...
Grade meetings have begun...
Several grade meetings were completed on Friday, but many more will be completed on Monday. It will be a very busy day, so thank you ahead for your patience. Remember, to expedite these meetings, make sure you have all of your grade lists, the failure and medical (PE) sheets complete, as well as the listing of which students still need to complete exams. For those students, it is also important that you put an "I" in both the exam and final grade column of the gradebook so that it can be more easily tracked.
**If you complete a student's grade after the grade meeting but before Wednesday morning you may make the corrections in your gradebook, but make sure that you notify Ms. Novy of the grades and that it has been completed. If the student completes the exam or any other grade correction after Wednesday morning, you will need to submit a grade change form (in exam procedures packet) to Ms. Novy as the grades will become live for the parents again Wed., Oct. 25.
Monday welcomes Quarter 2 and sweater season for our students. This means that students must now wear a blue or red uniform sweater with the Marian emblem and uniform slacks. Shorts are not acceptable during sweater season. The ONLY acceptable item for wearing over the sweater would be the Marian black fleece. NO other sweaters, sweatshirts, or coats are allowed throughout the school during school hours.
Girls are required to wear either solid white or solid blue dress blouses with collars, long or short sleeves. Blouses must be of a length to be worn tucked into the slacks at all times. Only solid colored undershirts are to be worn. All buttons except for the top button are to be fastened.
Boys are required to wear either solid white or solid blue dress shirts. Shirts must be of a length to be worn tucked into the slacks AT ALL TIMES. Only solid color undershirts are to be worn. All buttons including the top button are to be fastened when wearing a tie. conventional ties must be worn to cover the top button of the dress shirt. No bow ties are allowed. Ties may not be distracting or disrespectful.
Please enforce our school's dress code, as well as continuing to enforce our NO food and drinks (except for water) in all classes. Thank you for supporting the respectable culture that we have developed at our school.
This past week you had received an email (10-18) from Mrs. DiSIlvio about our Academic Breakfast Awards. We offer recognition for Academic Excellence and Academic Improvement. Traditionally we have only allowed each teacher to nominate one of each. As you may have noted from the Oct. 20 email from Mrs. DiSilvio, we have slightly altered our criteria to better serve the needs of our staff. You still only have two nominations each quarter, however you may now decide whether you chose one of each, or two of either of the two types of awards. In addition, although in the past we have not allowed ANY repeat nominees throughout the entire school year, we will no longer be monitoring repeat students for Academic Improvement awards, as oftentimes these students do not get the recognition that our Academic Excellence students seem to. If you have any additional questions about this change, please contact Ms. Novy or Mrs. Loy.
As of this point, all teachers should have been notified which administrator, Mrs. Loy or Ms. Novy, will be evaluating you this year. You should have also been offered the option of whether you would like to have your Formal or Informal observation done first. If you did not respond, we are assuming that you have no preference. Remember, Informals are unannounced, typically last about 20 minutes, and utilize a simple checklist focusing on Domains 2 & 3. Once completed, your observer will send you a copy of the checklist as well as any additional information as necessary. Although not required, there is an option for a post-informal conversation for clarification or questions and guidance. Formals, on the other hand, are pre-scheduled and involve a pre- and post- observation conference as well as a full period observation. Formals are now going to be completed on Evaluwise. If you were not able to attend the Webinar last Tuesday, or if you want a refresher about how to use the online tool, feel free to review the recorded version of that webinar here. We are beginning our observations this coming week and will continue them most likely through third quarter.
A special reminder... Administration primarily looks at evaluations as an opportunity to have a conversation about curriculum, offer suggestions and resources, all focusing on professional growth. There is always room for new ideas, growth, and improvement and an additional set of eyes will many times help us see what things we do really well and where we need to grow. Thank you for opening your classrooms and professional practices to us. Administration never wants to forget what it is like to be in the classroom, as the classroom and our students were the reason we went into education in the first place.
Finally, a quick reminder about this week's Evacuation Drill. It will be on Wednesday at 12:45 pm. This drill's purpose is simply to evacuate the building as quickly and efficiently as possible so as to get everyone, students and staffulty, out of some danger within the building (ie: fire, gas leak, etc) Don't forget your updated class roster and red/green cards to indicate if you have all of your students when the administrator checks with you. ALL are to evacuate, whether you have a class at the time or not. If you are missing your cards or are not sure the procedure, please contact administration prior to Wednesday. Thank you for your cooperation.
Have a wonderful week!
