Igor Stravinsky and Wassily Kandinsky
Hyer first grade students created abstract compositions in the style of artist Wassily Kandinsky while listening to the music of Igor Stravinsky. These drawings were later finished with glue lines and chalk in art class. The final pieces were set to music that the first graders performed on xylophones in music class as they learned about musical improvisation.

Stravinsky is best known for his pieces Le Sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring) and L'Oiseau de Feu (The Firebird).
Wassily Kandinsky 1866-1944
Kandinsky was a Russian artist who is said to be one of the first modern artists to create abstract art. However, like many artists, he painted recognizable pictures early in his career. Music was an inspiration in Kandinsky's development as an abstract artist - one of his goals was to create images that looked like the music he loved and he often used musical terms such as improvisation and composition to title his paintings. Igor Stravinsky was one of Kandinsky's favorite composers.
