A LIBRARY'S PURPOSE
A school library is a place for inquiry instruction, reading advocacy, and technology assistance.
But most students will tell you that their library is a place for refuge and companionship. Students flock to the library before school, during lunch, and after school not only for reading and school work, but also to meet up with friends, chat with teachers and the librarian, and find a place to belong.
In a world where face-to-face interaction is sparse, our school libraries offer a place for students to BE, SPEAK, and BECOME.
A LIBRARIAN'S ROLE
The Certified Teacher-Librarian brings with them years of classroom teaching experience in various grades and various academic courses. The school library certification adds experience in literacy innovations, inquiry expertise, learning technologies, resource purchasing, and curriculum leadership to the teacher-librarian's skill set.
Therefore, when you pass by the library, you will find your library staff performing various tasks. Throughout the day, a Certified Teacher-Librarian may be co-teaching with classroom teachers, instructing groups in search and literacy skills, creating and teaching STEM/Inquiry activities, creating purchasing budgets, ordering instructional and reading material, planning with teachers and leadership teams, facilitating student clubs, or organizing the physical library space.
Library paraprofessionals work on some of our campuses to lead read alouds, facilitate student clubs, and also organize the physical library space.
