Husky Howler
September 17, 2021
Dear Hill-Roberts Families:
We're looking forward to seeing you all in a few short weeks for Back-to-School Night (aka: Welcome Back Night or Curriculum Night). Please see important information below regarding the schedule and format of the evening.
Routine COVID testing will begin the week of September 27. If you have not yet provided consent for your child, please consider doing it again. Participation in testing helps to prevent community spread by identifying asymptomatic cases and ensures students are learning in the safest possible environment. Most significantly, students in the program will be able to avoid quarantining and remain in school in most circumstances if identified as a close contact through “Test and Stay.” As a result of our involvement in DESE’s incentive program this summer, we are able to extend the opportunity to the start of the school year. All families who provide consent by September 24 will be entered into a drawing for a $25 Visa Gift Card.
Please use the following link to provide consent for your child(ren): COVID Testing Program Consent
Sincerely,
Frank W. Rich, Principal
Back to School Night
September 30, 2021, 6:00 - 8:00 PM
Last Name A - M: 6:00 - 7:00 PM
Last Name N - Z: 7:00 - 8:00 PM
Teachers are preparing 30-minutes worth of presentation/activites that will include information about what curriculum will be covered and what the policies and procedures are for their classroom. We recognize that many families are busy with work, activities, and/or have children in multiple grades. We will allow families to see multiple teachers if they have more than one child here and also allow families who can't make it by 6:15 to attend the 7:15.
This evening is intended to be for parents/guardians only to give you the opportunity to hear about everything your children will be learning this year. However, if you struggle to find child care, please bring your children along. We do ask that you keep them with you and not allow them to wander the building. We also ask that you emphasize with them to need to be as quiet as possible to allow the other families to hear the teacher.
Here is a break-down of the evening's schedule:
Last Name A - M
6:00 – 6:15: Doors open. You will have a chance to speak with me, Mr. Chelman, our nurse, Adjustment Counselor, instructional coach, specialists (art, phys. ed., health, music, technology), special education staff and/or our PTO. Specialists will be in their classrooms and special education staff will be in the library.
6:15-6:45: Classroom Teachers will present in their classrooms
6:45-7:00: Presentations will end and you will have another chance to speak with the same folks as 6:00 – 6:15. During this time we ask that you clear out of your child’s classroom to allow the teachers to prepare for the next presentation
Last Name N - Z
7:00 – 7:15: Doors open. You will have a chance to speak with me, Mr. Chelman, our nurse, Adjustment Counselor, instructional coach, specialists (art, phys. ed., health, music, technology), special education staff and/or our PTO. Specialists will be in their classrooms and special education staff will be in the library.
7:15-7:45: Classroom Teachers give the same presentation as 6:15-6:45. This is done to allow families who have more than one child here to meet both teachers (if you have more than two children here, you might have to split duties or choose one to skip) as well as to allow families who cannot make it here by 6:15 to still get a chance to meet their child’s teacher.
7:45-8:00: Presentations end. Again, we ask that you clear out of your child’s homeroom to allow the teachers to clean up and make sure their classroom is ready for your children in the morning.
Thank you,
Mrs. Lavoie and Mrs. Garber
This Week in Health
Welcome back to a new school year! To begin the school year, as a class, your students have defined ways to have a successful time in Health and we are learning the procedures and expectations in class while getting to know each other. In creating ways to ensure Health class is successful we ask that students wear comfortable clothes they can move in, sneakers, and weather-appropriate clothing. We will try as time and space permits to get in some form of movement and/or yoga in each class. We will also take advantage of the weather to move, do yoga and explore our individual physical fitness outside while the weather permits.
Also in Health class, we are beginning to get to know one another and are becoming comfortable with our new classmates. We are exploring ways to make new friends and how to begin conversations with classmates we are just meeting while out in the playground at recess, during partner work, and at lunch. Together we have defined qualities that make a good friend and how to be a good friend. We are learning about each other and what we might have in common.
Your students have begun to identify feelings they may have and how to use a mindful moment in times they feel overwhelmed and stressed. We have begun to incorporate mindful moments in class to relax, take a break and reset. In the coming weeks, we will begin to learn yoga moves that will relax and calm the mind and the body as well.
Lastly, your students are exploring Healthy Habits and making choices that keep their bodies and minds growing strong and healthy. We will continue this work in-depth as the year continues.
I look forward to a great year with your Husky students!!
Ms. McKay, Health Teacher
