60 SECONDS WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT
Strongsville Middle School held their final concerts of the school year this past week. To mark a very special year, SMS Band Director Chris Chidsey enlisted composer James Swearingen to commission a piece of music - “New Frontier” - to be performed by the SMS 8th Grade Band. Thanks to the generosity of the Strongsville Education Foundation, this commissioned piece of music was a highlight for this end of the year concert. Click HERE for this week’s episode featuring “New Frontier” and the great work all of our middle school instrumentalists have accomplished.
EARLY RELEASE TIMES FOR THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL (WED. 6/7)
MUSTANG SPOTLIGHT - MURASKI ELEMENTARY INTERVENTION SPECIALIST SUZI KETTERER
Mrs. Suzi Ketterer has been in our District for six years. Having spent her first five years at Drake Elementary, this is her first year as an Intervention Specialist at Muraski Elementary. Mrs. Ketterer has both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Bowling Green State University. A resident of Strongsville, she also has children attending Strongsville City Schools.
“I love teaching students that they are able to learn. I tell my students that everyone learns in a different way and I find that many times, they need to be encouraged to keep trying to find their way of learning,” says Mrs. Ketterer. She adds, “Teaching young kids to read is one of my favorite parts of my job. The pride they feel when they accomplish something they didn't think was possible is my reward. I also get to work with so many different teachers who have many different talents. I learn a lot from being in their classrooms and sharing resources.”
Thanks Mrs. Ketterer for all of the encouragement you give our students and helping them find their pathway in learning!
ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS “FOOD FIGHT” RESULTS
Strongsville’s five elementary schools recently competed in a “Food Fight” to benefit the Strongsville Food Bank. Students were encouraged to bring in non-perishable items during a week-long contest. With a combined total of 4,898 donated items, the students and their families raised over $15,000 for the Strongsville Food Bank, surpassing last year's total of $6,000! Surrarrer Elementary had an average of five donations per student and a total of 1,865 items, earning them the “Food Fight” championship - but the real winners are the Strongsville Food Bank and the community members that benefit from their services.
2017-18 CURRICULUM UPDATE + SUMMER LEARNING RESOURCES
As a district, we are always aiming to stay progressive, relevant, and elite in our curricular offerings and programming in order to provide the best education for our students. Starting in the fall of 2017, there will be some exciting updates in the curriculum and materials used throughout Strongsville City Schools grades PK-5. Click HERE for the specific details and for a list of summer resources for students to stay actively engaged in interactive practice over the summer.

FIGHTING THE “SUMMER SLIDE”
The research is clear that children who don't read during the summer can lose up to three months of reading progress and that loss has a cumulative, long-term effect. When children consistently don’t read over the summers, they can fall up to 2 years behind by the time they reach the 5th grade. It’s always important to support your child’s learning at home, and over the summer this is a critical component. HERE is a short article on 5 Tips for Preventing Summer Slide by Children’s Literacy Initiative.
We are proud to announce that Strongsville City Schools purchased a 10-pack of grade level books for each of our 160 students who are part of our Title I program. This amounted to over 1,600 books, and we were able to do this using federal funds (not local taxpayer money). We are excited to provide these resources to our students and families in order to help fight the summer slide.
