School Closure News

School Closure Information

As you probably know, today Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham declared a state of emergency in New Mexico and ordered all public schools closed for three weeks beginning Monday, March 16th. Educators and our communities have many questions and your union is working to find the answers.

As of today, we do not know if, and when, instructional time will be made up. The mission of our union is to ensure that your pay is not disrupted and we are working with LAPS and PED to ensure that, along with your health, your livelihood is protected.

Our leadership team will be working with LAPS leadership to find the answers to all your questions. We will communicate what we learn as soon as possible.

In the meantime, our national union, American Federation of Teachers, has published these resources with lots of valuable information about COVID-19.

We are going to move forward with postponing our scheduled membership meeting because we do not have a grasp on what the state of things will be by this time next week. We would rather err on the side of caution. We will be talking as a leadership team about how to go forward sharing information about our negotiations and vote on the proposed changes soon. This could mean we hold a virtual meeting, or just postpone until mid-April. Please stay tuned.

We will be in touch soon and will share any information we have as soon as we get it.

As always, please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns. This is truly an unprecedented situation and our #1 priority at this time is to navigate it with as much communication and transparency as possible.

Be well,

LAFSE
