CELEBRATING THE FINE ARTS
The Maryville High School Band and Orchestra have had a successful third nine weeks, with many students auditioning and earning a spot in the East Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Senior Clinic. To earn a spot in the clinic, the students compete against other East Tennessee students in an audition process in early January. The students who earn the top spots qualify and will participate in All-State Band/Orchestra in Nashville, Tennessee. Out of all other schools in East Tennessee, both the Maryville band and orchestra programs (9th-12th grades) have the highest number of students who earned a spot in these clinics. The MHS Orchestra had 22 students earn a spot in Senior Clinic with 6 of those earning a spot in All-State. The MHS Band had 31 students earn a spot in Senior Clinic with 9 of those earning a spot in All-State.

STUDENTS WORK FOR THE BLOUNT COUNTY ELECTION COMMISSION
Over 30 students from Maryville High School worked for the Blount County Election Commission during the March 3rd, 2020 primary. These students first went through training conducted by Susan Knopf, Blount Count Administrator of Elections, and her staff a few weeks before the primary election and then worked at election precincts throughout Blount County on election day serving in various rolls such as checking voters IDs, help voters operate the machines correctly, counting absentee ballots, etc. Maryville High School students first started working elections during the 2018 electoral calendar. Susan and her staff have always been very impressed with the professionalism of our MHS students who have worked these elections and we hope to keep up this tradition going forward in 2020 and beyond.
These are the MHS students who worked the March, 2020 election:

NEWS FROM GUIDANCE...
Looking back:
We have had a very busy spring semester in our world so far! During the month of February, MHS school counselors met with current students regarding course selection for next school year. After spring break, MHS administration and counselors will begin creating the master schedule for the 2020-2021 school year based on student requests. If you have questions or concerns regarding your son our daughter’s 4 year plan or course selection, please reach out to his/her school counselor. Look for course verification sheets to arrive in your mailbox in April.
What’s New:
As we look toward the 2020-21 school year, MHS school counselors are excited to announce that we will be rolling out two new programs designed to support college and career readiness, SCOIR and YouScience. These technology platforms will operate in place of our current system, Naviance. Hopefully your student has already spoken with you about YouScience, a career guidance program. MHS students have been tasked with completing nine “brain games” in YouScience. These game results will measure your child’s career aptitudes and interests and point them toward potential career options. Why YouScience? Most career guidance programs focus solely on career interest without considering aptitude. We as school counselors feel that YouScience is valuable as it tests a child’s aptitudes and then couples it with his/her interests. Encourage your child to login to YouScience and show you the platform as it is quite insightful.
Our second new college/career readiness program is called SCOIR and is designed to aid in the college search process. Students can research colleges, “follow” colleges they are interested in, and take virtual “college tours.” Students will also use SCOIR to communicate with his/her school counselor regarding college admissions questions or concerns. MHS counselors will utilize SCOIR to send students documents (transcripts, test scores, letters of recommendation) to post-secondary institutions and to schedule college rep visits. In working with this program so far, we believe SCOIR is user-friendly, particularly for teenagers. Ask your child to download the SCOIR app for easy access right on his/her device.
Thoughts from the Social Emotional Learning Counselor:
Anxiety is one of the most common mental health issues that teens experience. Often, parents are not sure how to manage their child who is experiencing symptoms. The Anxiety and Depression Association of America has some simple and clear tips on how to help your child:
· Pay attention to your child’s feelings.
· Stay calm when your child becomes anxious about a situation or event.
· Recognize and praise small accomplishments.
· Don’t punish mistakes or lack of progress.
· Be flexible, but try to maintain a normal routine.
· Modify expectations during stressful periods.
· Plan for transitions (For example, allow extra time in the morning if getting to school is difficult).
Keep in mind that your child’s anxiety disorder diagnosis is not a sign of poor parenting. It may add stress to family life, however. It is helpful to build a support network of relatives and friends.
Looking forward:
March 12-22: Spring break! This week is a great time for juniors to visit colleges as they begin to narrow down their options and for seniors to complete scholarship applications.
March 24: in-school ACT for all juniors
April 2 @ 7:45 am: MTSU Celebration Breakfast. MTSU bound students will receive an invite soon.
April 28 @ 2:30 pm: Path to Pellissippi Event. If you plan to attend PSTCC this fall, you’ll want to attend!
If you have a Twitter account, we encourage you to follow our page @rebels_guidance. School counselors add announcements to this page and “retweet” articles from important stakeholders that we believe are valuable for our students and parents.
