General News! Week of Feb. 20th- 24th
Monday Greetings!
This month we are celebrating "Black History". Our morning announcements are sharing some interesting facts in a game called "Who Am I?" Students are encouraged to listen carefully to the information shared, perhaps explore a little more, and if they know who the information was about, they can submit an entry slip to win some prizes!
If you still have a progress report envelope at home or a letter about possible failure for the year, please sign and return these as soon as possible.
It is never too early to begin preparing for the End of Grade assessments. The GDOE site has the following resources for parents.

Social Studies- Mr. Salser
This week we will continue to focus on the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression. Students will be able to discuss and explain the government's economic policies, the over extension of credit, and the wild fluctuations of economic currencies all over the industrialized world. Those factors will play a role in the historic "Black Tuesday" Wall Street crash in Oct. 1929.
Science- Mrs. Allen
This week in Science, we will be studying simple machines and prosthetics. Students will be identifying types of different simple machines on Monday. Tuesday, they will be introduced to prosthetics and how they use simple machines to make work easier for people missing limbs. They will watch a video and read informational articles on the history, operation, and future of prosthetics. Wednesday, students will actually create a prosthetic “grabber” using simple machines based on a rubric that will be provided. Thursday and Friday, students will complete online activities to continue learning about simple and compound machines, forces, and motion. Our mastery assessment is quickly approaching. I will soon send out some study tools for the kids, so be on the lookout for those! Let’s have a very focused week of preparation! J
Math- Mrs. McKinney
Math – Monday we will be writing and interpreting equations from real life situations. The rest of the week we will be working on qualitative graphs. The students will look at a graph and have to interpret what the graph means. The students will have homework every night this week and part two, the equations for their stained glass windows will be due. Many students did not show me their rough drafts last week and will need to show them to me by Tuesday. This week we will start the Milestones reviews. The review will be two or three days a week and they will be five questions that we have covered earlier in the year. We will go over each of them the next day so students can ask questions. I will take grades on some of the assignments, but the students really need to practice all of the problems.
Upcoming due dates:
TASK 2: The equations of the lines from your drawing will need to be found. This will be due by Wednesday, February 22rd .
TASK 3: The final project will be due. This includes your final design with lines labelled and a separate sheet of equations. This will be due Wednesday, March 8th
Language Arts- Ms. Waxman
This Week In Language Arts:
We will begin The Boy In The Striped Pajamas. Our reading/ writing focus will be on: interpreting text, text structure, mood, key ideas, inference, characterization, reading for information, supporting a conclusion.
We will take our writing skills into a collaborative effort with Mrs. Allen's Science classes. As they research their information about prosthetic devices, they will be taking notes. In LA we will try to pull those pieces of information together in an Informational Essay/ Expository writing piece.
Last week we introduced "5 A Day Review" which will help reinforce many of the various grammar skills that we utilize regularly in our reading and writing Students were walked through each days skills sets, and asked to jot down clues to help them in their independent practice. This week they are being asked to try each days activities independently, before we review them together. The more actively they participate in these practices, the stronger their personal skill sets will be. We will take a quick check point quiz each week to help show areas of mastery.
We are in our 4th week of TweenTribune. Students are being asked to read 6 articles each week by Friday at 3 pm. Students who do not complete the assignment will not recieve credit.
FYI...Book 4 of our independent choice reading is due by this Friday, March 3rd.
