Dred Scott was brave because, he. He went to court 9 times but never won. Dred scott was not an ordinary slave. He did things slaves were afraid to do. He was the first slave to go to court and protest for his freedom. Dred Scott confident. Dred Scott was confident because he believed that he would win his case and become free that's why he never gave up kept trying. But in 1857 he was bought by the Mr. Emerson's sons and the set him free. Sadly he died 9 months later from tuberculosis
The Life He Lived
Dred Scott was born in Virginia in 1799. Dred Scott was born into slavery. He was first owned by Msr. Emerson. Dred Scott married Harriet Robinson in 1837 or 1838. Harriet gave birth to 4 children. They also had two boys but they died at an early age because of the harshness of slavery. Around 1840, Lizzie was born. “Dred Scott was willing to pay for his and his family’s freedom for a period of time perhaps years”. Mrs. Emerson refused. When Msr. Emerson died his sons bought Dred Scott and his family and set him free in 1857. Dred Scott died 9 months later from tuberculosis on September 17, 1858.
Why Dred Scott Is Famous
Dred Scott was famous because he was the first slave to go court and sue for his freedom. Dred Scott went to court because his owner took him to a free state, so Dred Scott Went to court to prove he was free. He lost, but he wasn't stopping there. He went back to court in 1843 and won!!! Two years later a judge said he made a mistake. So Dred Scott wasn't free anymore. Dred Scott went to the U.S Supreme Court and appealed the other judges decision. The U.S Supreme Court said a slave is a piece of property so he is not equal to other citizens so he can't sue for freedom. Dred Scott went to court 9 times and was unsuccessful every time. But in 1857, he was bought by Mrs.Emerson’s sons and they set him and his family free. Sadly Dred scott died 9 months later.
