Kindergarten
Kindergarten got a little “batty” this week we swooped, clutched and clamored through the halls of OSES. We learned about force and motion and how this applies to how bats fly. Bats actually don’t take off but have to drop at a force great enough to begin flying. We tested out different types of force and compared and contrasted them afterwards.
We also explored echolocation and tested out our echolocation outside! We had a great time learning how sound travels and vibrates back to us. We are continuing to practice our adding and subtracting in math. We sorted and counted bat pictures and then added our totals together too.
We are looking forward to a long weekend!
First Grade
You’ve heard of Shark Week... Now get ready for BAT week! Ms. Kelly’s class is reading the story “Stellaluna” and learning all about the different types of bats. We are learning about the difference between fact and opinion as we read informational and persuasive texts about the world’s only flying mammal. In math, we are practicing addition and subtraction strategies. We are gearing up to focus on doubles (8+8, 3+3, 6+6, ect.) The more fluent we are in math, the better mathematicians we will become!
Ms. Molnar’s class is starting their Pilgrims and Native Americans unit in Social Studies! We are really excited about our first field trip next Friday!
Second Grade
Field trip permission slips for the Orlando History Museum are due by October 22.
Third Grade
Third graders are so excited about our upcoming trip to Kennedy Space Center on October 25th. All the classes have started learning more about space by reading about different constellations and designing their own.
This week, Ms. Knight and Mrs. Sokoloff’s class learned more about Christopher Columbus to celebrate Columbus Day. We learned facts by reading a book about his life. As a STEM activity, students got into groups and designed boats using tin foil and paper. We had such a fun time!
Fourth Grade
Last week, the fourth grade classes ventured to our first field trip of the year: Pirate Adventure Dinner! We had a swashbuckling good time and were even sworn in as honorary pirates!
Fourth grade has been working hard mastering our multiplication facts since the beginning of the year and now it’s time to PARTY! We are having our Multiplication Ice Cream Party on Friday to celebrate all our hard work. Great job, 4th grade!
Fifth Grade
Sixth Grade

One winner will be chosen from each grade level in K-5 to move on to the county's STEM fair. Teachers are not required to grade anything this year for STEM Fair. There will be weekly help online meetings for families.
Science Fair
OSS’s science fair is an excellent opportunity for our students to explore their favorite topic in science. It provides an avenue for student research, allow students to be actively engaged in their own learning, and to use their own creativity to solve a pressing problem in an imaginative way. A science fair builds a bridge between home and school - establishing bonds between students, parents, and teachers and inspires students to become life long learners.
All forms must be typed or filled out using blue ink. NO pencil!
Mr. Stampas is the adult sponsor. Stampas@orlandoscience.org, (407) 253-7304
Form 1B is signed by the student and the parent. Besides the start date of experimentation on form 1A (10/20/17), all other forms prior to experimentation will be dated in September.

STEM teams Forming
We have new STEM teams forming for upcoming competitions. These teams will meet off campus. The competition dates are in December, February, and May. These are general lower cost than some of the competition teams, but some cost is required ($15 per student for the February event and about $50 per team for the May event, and money for the t-shirts if they are not donated, and kit items.) I highly suggest looking into where the coach/adults work to see if funds are available for sponsorships.
Here are the list of teams that are forming:
- Gliders (K-6)
- Math (K-6)
- Mousetrap Car (K-6)
- Water Bottle Rockets (K-6)
- Egg Drop (K-6)
- Energy Transfer Machine (Rube Goldberg) (3-6)
- Junior Solar Sprint (4-6)
- Critter Comfort Cottage (4-6)
- Solar Energy Cook-Off (4-6)
- Vex Robotics (6)
- Balsa Bridge (4-6)
Please sign up at http://bit.ly/ossenergywhizteams if you are interested in your student joining a team. Students/parents will be notified if the student is selected for a team. No coach = No team. The point of these teams is for the experience. This is our first year and there is NO pressure on coaches or teams to win. We want them to have the experience, have fun, and be engaged in STEM.

STEM Teams Are Forming!
Students from kindergarten to sixth grade are invited to join a STEM team. Teams will meet off campus and compete at between one to three competitions. There are eight teams to choose from! Students that are not on a competition team will have a better chance of making the team since we want to make sure that ALL students are able to compete in STEM competitions. Also, if a parent volunteers to be the coach, the student has a higher chance of being on a team.
The teams are: Mousetrap Car (K-6), Water Bottle Rockets (K-6), Egg Drop (K-6), Rube Goldberg (Energy Transfer Machine) (3-6), Junior Solar Spring (4-6), Critter Cottage (4-6), Solar Energy Cook-Off (4-6), and Vex Robotics (6).

Red ribbon week
Red Ribbon Week will be celebrated this year at Orlando Science Schools October 22-31st. The mission of the Red Ribbon Campaign® is to present a unified and visible commitment towards the creation of a DRUG - FREE AMERICA. The National Family Partnership helps citizens across the country come together to keep children, families and communities safe, healthy and drug-free, through parent training, networking and sponsoring the National Red Ribbon Campaign®. It is an ideal way for people and communities to unite and take a visible stand against drugs. Show your personal commitment to a drug-free lifestyle through the symbol of the Red Ribbon, October 22 - 31st.
WHAT'S THE PLEDGE ABOUT?
- As parents and citizens, we will talk to our children and the children in our lives about the dangers of drug abuse.
- We will set clear rules for our children about not using drugs.
- We will set a good example for our children by not using illegal drugs or medicine without a prescription.
- We will monitor our children's behavior and enforce appropriate consequences, so that our rules are respected.
- We will encourage family and friends to follow the same guidelines to keep children safe from substance abuse.
Please see flyer below for Red Ribbon week dress up(down) days

Orca's Core Values and character Education
Did you know there are scientifically proven benefits of being kind?
Watch the science of kindness video to learn more.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=51&v=O9UByLyOjBM
Did you also know that kindness is teachable?
“It’s kind of like weight training, we found that people can actually build up their compassion ‘muscle’ and respond to others’ suffering with care and a desire to help.” Dr. Ritchie Davidson, University of Wisconsin
Or that kindness is contagious?
The positive effects of kindness are experienced in the brain of everyone who witnessed the act, improving their mood and making them significantly more likely to “pay it forward.” This means one good deed in a crowded area can create a domino effect and improve the day of dozens of people!
Character Education has begun at OSES and we are having a great time learning our social skills at school and the students are learning how to use these tools successfully too! This year part of our Character Education curriculum we have introduced "Operation Impact" our goal is to share and show how our students are reaching out to the communities, families and other students to show their positive character traits.
Here are a few character traits:
- Kindness
- Empathy
- Trustworthy
- Reaching Out to Others
- Building Friendships
We want to see how your children are using their character traits outside of school and featuring them each week in our weekly newsletter!! This is a great way to spotlight your child's positive influence that they have in our community and school! We look forward to seeing your pictures and experiences.
Please send a few pictures and small description of your children's activity (encourage them to write it on their own too). Pictures must be handed in on Monday's in order to make it for the Friday newsletter. They can be sent in to your child's teacher or emailed to Mrs. Krygowski at katherine.krygowski@orlandoscience.org
We can't wait to see our wonderful students putting #Operation Impact to work in our community!!!
