Reminder - STEM Strategic Planning Meeting This Thursday

To help facilitate the discussion on how to enhance the STEM program, please look over the following information about some of the STEM related activities that students may be exposed to over their K-12 experience.

STEM - Science Technology Engineering Math

STEM education is a way to combine many related disciplines—currently viewed by students and society as independent subjects with little overlap—into a single, integrated program that emphasizes the inter-dependencies among the four disciplines and their applications to everyday life. Elementary (1-6)

FOSS Units at every elementary grade level include activities that incorporate various components of a STEM program. The program is designed to guide students toward applying their understanding of science content through activities such as developing strategic plans and designing and inventing new machines.   • solve the problem of how to balance a paper crayfish with or without counterweights

  • design and create ramps for a marble to move through

  • design and build their own instrument

  • use their understanding of solids and liquids to design and construct useful objects

  • construct a variety of electrical circuits and then use their designs to send messages across telegraph lines

Middle School/High School (7-12)

  • test Newton’s cars to investigate a variety of forces

  • build and program robotic cars using the Lego Mindstorms kits

  • design and build devices to drill and collect samples from an asteroid
