Important Announcement For School Bus Riders!
Tomorrow, Friday, April 6th, students who ride the school bus home from school will be arriving home later than normal. The bus bringing the students back from Outdoor School will be taking students home from school so we have to wait for the bus to arrive back at Lee from Newport. We are hoping the bus is back to Lee by 3:00. Feel free to pick your child up from school if you do not want them waiting the extra time for the bus to arrive. If you change your students after school plan, please let us know in Pick Up Patrol or calling school at 503.263.7150.

We are very excited about the fantastic author we are showcasing this year! Kate DiCamillo, is the author of 25 children's fiction novels. She has been awarded several medals and honors for the books she has written, many of which you might be familiar with!
All 3rd-6th grade students are encouraged to participate in the Lee Book Battle Bonanza starting on Monday, April 10th! The wonderful literature books we will be reading are:
The Tiger Rising
Flora & Ulysses
Because of Winn Dixie
Book Battles will be held on Thursday, June 1st, 2023. We will have separate battles for 3rd and 4th grade students and 5th and 6th grade students. Anyone needing books can visit the Lee School Library, Canby Public Library, or Mrs. Parker to check out a book.
Every Wednesday morning, after announcements, all students are invited to a short book meeting in the Learning Center. This is a great time to connect with peers about the reading, ask questions, and learn more about the books we are reading!

Health Curriculum Adoption Parent Input Opportunity
The Canby School District will host a Zoom meeting on Wednesday, April 19 from 6-7 p.m. in English and 7-8 p.m. in Spanish. The goal is to have 12-15 parents answer some questions and provide input about health education and instruction in Canby. We will use this information to support our planning for our Health Curriculum adoption and Parent Open House on April 26. If you are interested, please complete this Google Form. If we have great interest, we will choose participants by lottery to create a small enough group for our input session.
Water Testing
Canby School District has completed its first cycle of lead and copper water testing, and all fixtures came in under the state requirement of 15 parts per million. We collected samples from Ackerman, the district office and maintenance shop, Baker Prairie Middle School, and Canby High School. All fixtures were tested as long as a student could cup their hands under it to collect water.
Those interested can view the reports here: HASS Healthy and Safe School Reports.
Testing will take place in the 2023-2024 year for the remaining schools: Carus, Eccles, Knight, Lee, Ninety-One, and Trost.
For questions, please reach out to Shawna Grant, District Operation Specialists with Facilities, at sgrant@canby.k12.or.us or 503-266-0018 xt. 3920.
Library Book Review
The Canby School District continues to offer opportunities for community members to review library books that are up for consideration to be added into circulation. Books will be displayed on Monday, April 10 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the Ackerman Library. To find a list of the titles for review and our review template, you can visit our CSD library page.
Important Assessment Information for Canby Families
Thank you for supporting your child’s participation in Oregon Statewide Assessments. Assessment is an important part of each student’s academic experience. Beginning in kindergarten and through grade 12, learners in the Canby School District experience a variety of formative, interim, and summative assessments. Oregon Statewide Assessments are one example of a summative assessment administered in grades 3 through 8, and grade 11. Students in these grade levels are required to participate in English Language Arts and Math assessments annually. In grades 5 and 8, students also participate in Science. Assessment tasks are tied to grade-level standards and units of study. Each assessment is an opportunity for students to demonstrate cumulative growth and learning over the course of their school experience.
Canby schools begin Oregon Statewide Assessments in March; and Canby School District, like all districts in Oregon, is striving for 95% or greater student participation. This goal is essential for understanding the depth and breadth of learning for student groups across our schools, and for evaluating programs and resources. Oregon Summative Assessment data provides information to the Canby community and to district teams about our successes or strengths and areas for improvement.
Your principal and teachers will be communicating additional information about Oregon Statewide Assessment dates and ways to support your student’s success. Please reach out to your school principal or classroom teacher if you have further questions. Canby School District appreciates your partnership.
When a family chooses to opt-out of OSAS, students will work in a separate location to complete a similar Math, Reading, Writing or Science work sample while OSAS is administered in their class.
Lee CARE Award Nominations
Each month, Canby School District and the Canby Kiwanis Club will highlight a different school in our district and will recognize a staff member from that school with the CARE Award. Lee will be highlighted during the month of April. So, if you know of an Lee staff member who has made a difference in your life, the life of a child you know, or in the community, please consider nominating them for the CARE Award.
Health Worries?
As we get into cold and flu season, please remember to review our district and school health 'Stay Home Guidelines'. If you are wondering about whether your child should stay home, please contact the office with questions. Thank you for your help in keeping all of our students, staff and families healthy!
