Counting Collections on 100th Day!
Class News 1 - 27 - 17
Our class welcomed our student teacher, Ms. Powell-Littler to our class last week. She has already become a member of our community.
In literacy this week, we read tall tales of John Henry, Davy Crockett, and Pippi Longstocking. We discussed how these traditional stories of heros and heroines were exaggerated with hyperbole to make them memorable and entertaining. We were able to visualize what a character looked like by drawing the character from the author's descriptive detail.
In math, we are exploring dividing decimals by whole numbers and with decimals. We have been continuing our exploration of the powers of ten and did a fun counting collection activity on our 100th day exploring using 10 and 100 to count large amounts of small objects.
In science, we are continued our learning in living systems exploring nutrient systems in plants and animals. We have planted wheat in clear bags soaking in the sun (or what we wish was sun!) and wheat in dark bags hidden in closets. Fifth graders were surprised to learn that the wheat in the dark bags grew more than the clear. Many theories have been floated; ask your fifth grader his or her theory!
Learning Goals:
Time Traveling: I can investigate and infer reasons for European explorers to have traveled to the New World.
Writing: I can present my learning about the motives behind a European exploration to the New World through a Google Slideshow or a Kahoot quiz.
Reading: I can visualize the text to focus my attention. I can identify hyperbole and point of view of a tall tale.
Science: I can make observations, measurements, predictions and inferences about a plant's growth and development.
Important Dates:
- 2 - 14 - 17 Valentine's Party & first annual 5th Grade Cardboard Boat Regatta (more info to come)
