Conceptual Understanding the Focus of Math Night 2019

The Corner Middle School Math Department led the November CMS Connects last Thursday evening conducting Math Night for students and families in grades 5-8. More than 100 parents, grandparents, students, sibling, teachers, and other community members attended the event.

Beginning with a hot dog supper provided by the CMS Math Department, guests began the evening with a conversation about our school's work to shift the mindset about math instruction and learning at our school. The math team -- made up of Rebekah Myers, Nikki Burgos, Clarissa McCarty, and Jennifer Rouse -- led the students and their families through a math activity to get them thinking and to engage them in "the productive struggle" of the learning process.

Students and their families moved into the competition gym to participate in grade level activities with their grade level teachers to help families see the need for not only procedural work in math, but also the need for conceptual understanding for greater growth.

The evening ended with another video -- The Backwards Bicycle -- and door prizes for those attending. What a great night of learning at CMS Connects as we partnered with students and their families to better understand what we are doing here at Corner Middle School!

The videos shared at the event are below the photographs. In addition, grade level math resources will be shared next week will all families in The Weekly Buzz.

Attendance Matters

As we approach the holidays, the question arose from several folks this week, "Do we have to go to school on Monday and Tuesday?" Corner Middle School is in session on Monday, November 25th and Tuesday, November 26th. Attendance will be taken. Instruction will be provided. Families, please have your students at school at school and on-time each day!

Parents and guardians, attendance matters at Corner Middle School! Your student's attendance or lack thereof will impact his or her achievement long term. His or her attendance will impact the student's mindset on the importance of an education as well as the importance of a commitment to work.

We understand that holiday travel may be necessary. Parents have seven days for which they can write a parent note for any absence. Beyond that, a doctor's note will be required. Please use those parent note days judiciously as we also are aware flu season is ahead.

Please help us by working with us to emphasize the importance of attendance in school while it is in session!

CMS Students and Families Donate to Local Food Bank

The CMS Peer Helper Club sponsored by Ms. Chloe Whitaker held its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive last week and collected more than 1400 food items to donate to a local food bank. Students and their families were asked to donate non-perishable food items that would be delivered to Cane Creek Baptist Church and their community food bank for distribution during the holiday season. Our students and community responded and the following number of items were received:

5th Grade 200

6th Grade 92

7th Grade 719

8th Grade 390

TOTAL 1401

Because they donated/collected the most food throughout the week, the 7th Grade class has won special activity and treat during advisory time when we return from the Thanksgiving holidays. Corner Middle School encourages community service and charitable giving among our students for those in need. Thank you so much for your assistance in helping with organization who does amazing work to help so many people in our community!
