School Closures and Delays
Winter Weather, Road Conditions, and School Delays or Closures
Each winter, we have some days when the weather affects safe travel. When road conditions are a concern, school district staff gathers information from a variety of sources to decide if it is safe to transport our students to school. OUR FIRST CONCERN IS THE SAFETY OF STUDENTS AND STAFF. Our school buses are well-equipped for winter roads and our drivers are trained to drive in all kinds of weather. We know that it is safer for students to ride on a school bus than to drive themselves to school.
Parents should check the safety of their bus stop when weather is bad to be sure that students will be safe going to and from the bus stop.
The Hood River County School District uses an automated phone and email notification system, called School Messenger, for communicating important messages such as emergencies, school closures, school delays, and early dismissals. There is no need to do a separate registration process. School Messenger uses the same phone number and email you provided to your school on the student registration form. Please contact your school if your phone or email changes so we have current contact information.
HRCSD will also update the district website with important messages such as emergencies, school closures, school delays, and early dismissals.
On inclement weather days you can also call the District Office or any school phone number and press 2 on the menu to get the latest update on school closures, school delays, and early dismissals.
Our primary notification system will be School Messenger. You can also download the HRCSD Mobile Communication App from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store to your SmartPhone. This App can be used to view announcements and receive notifications from the School District to your SmartPhone. The District is no longer using FlashAlert.

Parent Choices
Road conditions do vary from place to place in the county. Some days, parents may wish to keep their students at home because of bad weather. Students may make up missed assignments and parents must provide a written excuse when the student arrives at school.
Closing School Before the End of the Day
Parents must have child care arrangements when school starts late or closes early. Please be sure your child and school know about these arrangements.
Cascade Locks School may operate on a different schedule than the rest of the district in bad weather because their road conditions are often different than the rest of the county.

Cancelaciones y Retrasos Escolares

Speech and Debate News
The Hood River Valley Speech and Debate team took 26 competitors to the Clackamas Holiday Edge Tournament on Saturday, December 6th at Clackamas High School. The tournament was estimated to have been the largest high school forensic competition held in Oregon in the past 20 years. Eight hundred competitors from forty-four teams in the region participated in 33 different events.
While all of the Hood River Valley students did well, the seniors and freshman had particular success. Freshmen Emily Mitchell and Sarah Wang made it to the final round of competition in their individual events. Seniors Claire Hamada and Darrian Thomas made finals: in Storytelling for Hamada and After Dinner Speaking for Thomas. Hannah Hart, also a Senior, went to the final round of competition in Poetry and won First Place in Storytelling. The Senior/Freshman sister-brother duo of Payton and Carter Rigert received special recognition for winning all three of their Parliamentary Debates.
Coach DeLona Campos-Davis notes that this is possibly the largest team Hood River has ever had for Speech and Debate, putting HRV in the ranks of largest 5A teams in the state. “We are a young, growing team thanks to the extra effort of our upperclassmen in recruiting and teaching younger students.” In addition to the student participants, five team parents served as volunteer judges for the tournament. “The team is grateful for the support provided by our parents and larger community,” said Campos-Davis.

ASVAB Test/Career Choices
Does your student know what career he/she wants to pursue after high school? The ASVAB test can help students decide their future goals. The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is a multi-aptitude test, consisting of 8 short individual tests covering Work Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Mathematics Knowledge, General Science, Mechanical Comprehension, Electronics Information, Numerical Operations, and Coding Speed. There is no passing/failing the test. It is for informational use only.
Deciding which college, trade school or military branch to pursue are key career decisions. The ASVAB results can help in making that decision. The results provide information on their readiness for advanced academic education and what careers they might want to pursue.
The ASVAB test is free and takes approximately 3 hours. The results are sent back to the school. The military DOES NOT receive any test results for students whose parents opted them out at the beginning of the year. A follow-up using an Exploring Careers Workbook can help students figure out what careers might best suit that individual.
The test, (available to sophomores, juniors and seniors) will be given December 2, 2015, and will start at 1:45. The test will take place in room C12. Students who do not drive will either need to ride the activity bus or be picked up once they complete the test. Students need to sign up in the SUMMIT Career Center by December 1, 2015. If you have any questions or would like to sign your student up, please call Wendy Herman in the SUMMIT Career Center at 541-387-5034 ext. 1, or e-mail wendy.herman@hoodriver.k12.or.us.
