MEET CHARLIE!
Available for adoption at Austin Pets Alive!
6 Year Old Catahoula Leopard Dog Mix!
Charlie may sound like a boy name, but rest assured, she's a lady.
At some point, she lost her family and spent a full year in the APA shelters, which made her nervous. That said, she has been living with her foster for a few weeks now and put the anxiousness behind.
Charlie is well-mannered, calm, affectionate, gentle, smart, good with kids, good with dogs, cuddly and eager-to-please. What's not to love? She's pretty swell.
Things she likes: cuddling, food, swimming, walking, running, belly rubs, other dogs, car rides, plush toys, stalking squirrels, attention of virtually any kind.
She is pretty good on a leash, but her squirrel stalking affinity sometimes brings out her 'bad' leash behaviors. She's currently making progress, but will need a someone to continue to reinforce good leash behaviors and training. Which isn't a problem because she is a quick learner and eager-to-please. She is also getting better at off-leash recall, but is a sucker for a good scent.
Regardless of pace, she loves being out on the trail. Charlie would make a great companion for someone that isn't wanting to run super fast or super far but is still committed to getting her regular exercise and socialization.
Charlie is at her sweetest when tuckered out, but as dogs go, she on the calmer side. If a walk or swim isn't in the cards, she is perfectly content hanging out with her people or just watching them.
She would be a great addition to a family that didn't want the hassle of a puppy (complete with potty accidents and chewing and teething and high levels of energy and lots of training work to be done) but still wanted a dog with good energy and a good (and known) in-house/on-leash behavior track record and good life left in her with lots of love to give. She would also be a good second dog if you think your current pup may do well with a companion.
Charlie likes everyone she meets (of the two-legged or four-legged variety). She can be a little shy with adults at first. She hasn't been checked out with cats yet. And she is not crate-trained
She has been treated for heartworms at the shelter.
When Charlie is really excited to see you, she'll bend her head down and under to surprise you with a very adorable canine forward somersault that almost always guarantees some good belly rubs.
Come visit if you want to set up some time and see if it is a good fit.
