News from Conyers Learning Academy
January 4th, 2021
Dear CLA Families,
We are excited to start a New Year and hope that 2021 brings us nothing but good news. In addition, we can’t wait to see our In-Person students back in the building tomorrow and all of our Virtual learners online. Let's get the second half of the year off to a great start!
Our newsletter today will serve as a reminder of many of CLA’s procedures and expectations for students and much of this information is repeated from earlier this year. As we continue to put safety as our top priority, we want to make sure all of our students and parents review our COVID protocols and are ready for school to resume in-person tomorrow.
If you are an in-person family and you made the choice to travel or visit family, at the last Board of Education meeting, Dr. Heinz outlined some options for families. “We ask that families who travel for the holidays voluntarily quarantine for two weeks (or revised quarantine lengths based upon IDPH guidance) upon returning home. Concurrent learning will be available to in-person students needing to stay home through Friday, January 15. After that date, concurrent instruction will only be available to in-person students who are in quarantine due to illness or exposure.” If your family is planning to quarantine and participate concurrently, please contact the office so proper arrangements can be made. Here is a link to the newsletter shared by Dr. Heinz on 12/10/20.
We are looking forward to starting the second half of the year tomorrow! If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to our administrative team. Thank you for your continued partnership to make our school year a success!

Message from Mr. MAC
CLA’s mascot wanted to welcome back all of his friends and wish them all a Happy New Year! To start the school year, Mr. MAC created a few short videos for students to watch and help prepare them for the start of the school year. Since many of our friends have not been in school at CLA in over 6 weeks, he thought it would be a good idea to share these videos again as a reminder of what school will look like with the COVID procedures in place. Please take a few minutes to watch these with your child before returning in-person tomorrow.
Dress for Outdoor Recess/Gross Motor
Now that winter has officially begun, we want to remind all of our parents that we plan to bring our students outside for their Recess or Gross Motor time whenever possible. Please remember to send your child dressed in warm clothing with a hat, gloves, snow pants and boots (when appropriate). If your child does not have any of these essential items, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s classroom team and we can do our best to support.
Student Health Certification
As students return to school, parents are required to certify that their child is symptom and exposure free each day. Before you send your student to school, a parent must sign the student’s Health Certification lanyard for that day. By signing the lanyard every day you are certifying that the answers to the questions and symptoms below are all ‘no’.
- Fever of 100.4° or higher
- New onset of moderate to severe headache
- Cough
- Sore Throat
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Shortness of breath
- Abdominal pain from unknown cause
- New congestion/ runny nose
- New loss of sense of taste or smell
- Nausea
- Fatigue from unknown cause
- Muscle or body aches
Have you been told by a contact tracer that your child has been in close contact with a COVID-19 positive person in the last 14 days?
At the end of each week a new card will be placed in your child’s lanyard for the following week. Please note that the card must be dated and signed each day prior to school.
If a child comes to school and they do not have a lanyard or their lanyard is not signed, your child will be assessed by the school nurse, and a reminder note will be sent home, or phone call will be made. If the student shows any symptoms of COVID, they will be brought to the Protective Health Space and will need to be picked up from school immediately.
Additionally, if a student develops any symptoms of COVID throughout the school day (see list above), they will be brought to the Protective Health Space and will need to be picked from school immediately.
If your child was exposed to anyone who tested positive over winter break, please call our school nurse to discuss the necessary quarantine timelines.

Transportation
Buses
If your child is taking the bus to and/or from school, you can find the pickup and drop off times in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal.
If your child has a safety vest/harness as part of his/her IEP, please remember to send them in it each day. If the vest no longer fits with the use of a winter coat, please contact the office and we can arrange for a larger size to be available.
If you are not sure if your child requires a safety vest based on their IEP, please contact your child’s teacher.
All students are required to wear a mask while they are riding the bus. Please keep practicing with your child to wear a mask!
Please make sure to put your child’s first and last name on their backpack prior to the first day of school.

Breakfast, Snack and Lunch at CLA
Students in the half day Early Childhood classrooms will not be allowed to eat in the classrooms. We want to make sure that all students are able to have breakfast and a snack each day, so these meals will be sent home with students to eat at home.
All students at CLA will be provided with the opportunity to take home a breakfast and snack package and a sack lunch. The breakfast is meant for students to eat the next day prior to coming to school. The lunch can be eaten that day for AM students and for the next day for PM students.
Please contact your child’s teacher if you are interested in having a Breakfast/Snack, Lunch, and/or Milk sent home each day with your child.
