South Lebanon Elementary School
January 2023
Notes and News from the Principal
Welcome back from the winter break and welcome to 2023 at South Lebanon Elementary School! As we enter into the heart of the winter months, please be sure to keep your contact information updated in Skyward so that you receive communication regarding school closures and early dismissals. In the event of a 2 hour delay, your child will be picked up 2 hours later than their scheduled bus pick up time. Be sure to allow extra time for the buses as the roads may be slippery. Also, please make sure to label your child's coat and belongings with his/her name as these items often get left behind on the playground when temperatures fluctuate.
Please take note of a few upcoming dates on the district calendar. School will be in session on January 16th. This is a snow makeup day. We will use this day to make up for the inclement weather day on December 15. School will also be closed on January 23 for a professional development day for professional staff. This is not a snow makeup day and will not be made up as a snow day in the event of an additional school closing. If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to give us a call in the South Lebanon office.
Warm Regards,
Mr. Brown
One School, One Book
South Lebanon is about to take part in a special, communitywide shared reading event! Every family will receive a copy of the same book and will be asked to read it together at home. The book title will remain a surprise until it is announced at a special assembly on January 6!
Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader, and it is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. With this program, we aim to build a Community of Readers at our school. Everyone – students, parents, teachers, even administrative staff – will all be following along together.
Along with the book, you will receive a reading schedule so that you can keep up at home. Generally, you will be asked to read about 15 minutes each weeknight.
In school, your child will be invited to answer daily trivia questions to encourage and reward attentive listening. You will soon find that your child will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. In class, students will explore the book through activities and discussion. You will want to make sure your family keeps up so that your child can be included. When our program concludes, your family can keep the book and enjoy it again for years to come, or you can donate it back to the school.
When a whole school reads a book, there’s a lot to talk about. With your help, we can build a Community of Readers at our school. Special thanks to South Lebanon’s Parent Teacher Partnership (PTP) for helping to fund this important event.
