Newsela - Nonfiction Articles, Appropriate Reading Levels
Newsela is a database of current events articles that can be read on different reading levels or instantly translated into Spanish. Visit the site and use your NBISD email credentials to create an account. Setup your classes and have students join with a code. Assign articles for the students to read and quiz over. Articles can be searched based on topic, reading level, or features. The free account allows the teacher to see a class average for quiz results, but the paid account gives you more features for drilling down to the student result level. Have students create a shortcut and use Newsela articles as bellringer activities.
Newsela is currently hosting a Student Vote 2016 mock election in partnership with Rock The Vote to encourage students to experience the election process.
