Mound Fort 9th: 1930s and 1960s
Ninth-grade students at Mound Fort Junior High School will soon read To Kill a Mockingbird for their language arts classes. To build background knowledge, teachers Kelly Buie and Judi McMinn and District Teacher Librarians guided students through research projects on historical events to help students situate the novel in its historical context (1930s) and the period during which the novel was written (1960s). Topics ranged from the Dust Bowl and Great Depression to Freedom Riders and the Civil Rights Movement.
Students collaborated in small groups using NoodleTools to develop bibliographies and organize their information on digital note cards. Students created poster boards that guided their classroom presentations. Each board included a topic sentence, three essential questions, and evidence of research that answered their questions. Students shared their presentation boards with their families and friends at a well-attended literacy night.
