Understanding How the Library Is Organized
The Easy Books
These are the fictional picture books. They are sorted by reading level first (light blue, yellow, green, dark blue, white, and purple/indigo). The books are then sorted by their call number. The call number begins with an "E" for easy. The last part of the call number is the first three letters of the author's last name. For example, my last name is Evans. If I wrote a fictional picture book, the call number would be E EVA.
The Fiction Books
This section houses the fiction books that are not considered picture books. This means these books have more words and little to no pictures. The fiction books in this library are organized by genre. The genres are adventure, animal, fantasy, historical fiction, horror, humor, mystery, sports, realistic fiction, movie/TV, and graphic novel. Then, the books are sorted based on their call number. The call number begins with a "F" for fiction. The last part of the call number is the first three letters of the author's last name. For example, if my last name was Avery and I wrote a fictional book, the call number would be F AVE.
The Nonfiction Books
This section houses the nonfiction books. These books are sorted by the Dewey Decimal number system. There are posters in this section that should help you. Here is the basic information:
- 000-099 Computer Science
- 100-199 Philosophy and Psychology
- 200-299 Religion
- 300-399 Social Sciences
- 400-499 Language
- 500-599 Science
- 600-699 Technology
- 700-799 Arts and Recreation
- 800-899 Literature
- 900-999 History and Geography
If I wanted a book about animals, they are usually in the 595-599 area. Many of the call numbers have decimal points, so that is where this section gets tricky. The call number may look like this: 599.162 CLA.
The Biography Books
The biography books are housed in their own section. These books are either biographies or autobiographies. They are sorted by subject, such as presidents or athletes, and then by the person's last name. The call numbers begin with a "B" for biography. If I wanted to locate a biography about Louis Pasteur, I would look for B PAS.
The Reference Books
The reference books are limited and cannot be checked out. They are organized just like the nonfiction books.
