High School Information Night (new)
Dear Five Star 8th Grade Families,
We are so excited to tell you more about the variety of quality, advanced academic programming available at each of our high schools. All incoming Five Star 9th graders who reside within the district’s boundaries are eligible to apply for any of our high school programs, regardless of their attendance area boundaries. If you plan to attend your boundary high school, you do NOT need to attend this event. Each high school will host an 8th grade information night in March.
We encourage you to get to know more about each of these programs to decide what is the best fit for your student. Our High School Information Nights on Nov. 15 and 17 are a great way for you to get more information and to ask questions before making a decision. These sessions are both hosted at the district’s Educational Support Center at 1500 E. 128th Ave. in Thornton.
Session 1: Tuesday, Nov. 15 from 6:30 to 7:10 p.m.
Session 2: Thursday, Nov. 17 from 7:20 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Each school will present during each of the two sessions. Keep in mind, there is only time for you to attend two school presentations. We encourage you to click the link below to learn more about school offerings to decide which presentations you would most like to attend during High School Information Night.
Good luck, DECA!
Veteran's Day Celebration (repeat)
For several years now, Mountain Range has hosted a Veteran's Day Celebration Event for all 11th graders. This Wednesday, November 9th, Mountain Range is proud to observe Veterans day by welcoming in veterans, or currently serving members of the armed forces to our school. During the day students will have the opportunity to meet our veterans, hear their stories and ask questions around the experience of serving for our country. Our events will run from 8 am with a light breakfast through our recognition parade and Veterans assembly, which will include a student and keynote speakers, followed by a catered lunch to thank you for your service around noon. If you are currently serving or a veteran and would like to join us, please complete the attached form below.
Please sign up here if you are interested in being a part of this day.
Base Camp Fun! (new)
- Anger Lessons: Students reflected on how they have seen Anger and frustration expressed, and which they feel are healthy vs. unhealthy. Students worked in pairs to learn about the Science of Anger, and how it activates your brain into action to protect ourselves from perceived sources of harm.
- Half Group Lesson: We watched videos about emotional regulation, coping skills, and strategies to help us stay calm (Mindfulness and deep breathing)
- We completed a very symbolic and impactful activity in which students could write down any of their frustrations or anger and, using water-soluble paper, dissolve away their frustrations.
- Problem-solving Lessons: Students were challenged to provide constructive solutions to everyday problems that high school students typically experience.
- Students anonymously recorded problems on posters and after they completed that portion of the activity, they provided solutions based on the responses on the poster.

Attendance Reminder (repeat)
Parents/guardians should call the attendance office within two school days of the school day absent to request authorization for their student’s absence. It is the school’s authority to identify each absence as authorized (excused) or unauthorized (unexcused) per Colorado statute. Parents/Guardians are required to provide the school with an explanation of why a student is missing class. Absences due to family vacations, and/or educational experiences not sponsored by the district and non-emergency appointments will be reviewed on an individual basis by an Administrator/Dean. The student’s attendance and academic record will be taken into consideration in making a determination if the absences are authorized or unauthorized.
Students May Not Have Any Unauthorized Absences On The Day Of A School-Sponsored Activity (Athletics, Performances, Etc.) To Be Eligible For Participation. School approved activities will be considered authorized absences:
Examples of authorized absences (documentation may be required)
Absence caused by illness, injury, or physical, mental and/or emotional disability, or non-emergency medical/dental appointments (a doctor’s excuse may be required for extended absences);
Family emergencies or hardship (i.e. death in the family, etc.);
Religious observances generally recognized by an established and bona fide religious organization;
Absences required by a legal body (court, juvenile authorities or police);
Other reasons specified by law.
Examples of unauthorized absences and tardies.
Alarm clock failure or getting up late;
Taking a family member to work or school;
Traffic;
Car trouble;
Doing work for another class;
Avoiding a test or class activity; and
Babysitting.
Parents/guardians may call the school and ask for absences to be authorized without documentation. The school may authorize up to 5 days of absences in a semester without requesting documentation.
For an absence to be excused a telephone call or signed note from the custodial parent/legal guardian, medical practitioner(s), or other authorized official must be submitted within two (2) school days of the school day absent. In the case of multiple consecutive absences, the excuse must be submitted within two (2) school days of the last school day absent.
After 5 excused absences in a semester, the school may require proper documentation for any excused absence the student might have. Without documentation the absence will be marked unauthorized (unexcused). Proper documentation (see below explanation of proper documentation of absences) must be turned in within 3 school days of the absence to be considered.
Parents/Guardians should be ready to present documentation regarding any request to authorize an absence, though it will not be standard practice to request documentation for the first five excused requests made provided requests are made within two school days. Any absence reported after the next school day needs to be accompanied with proper documentation. Proper documentation must have the times and dates of the absences identified. Examples of proper documentation include court documents, medical/dental office notes, or other documents proving the absences meet the previously established criteria for authorized absences. For prearranged absences, the parents and students must get prior approval from the school.
