Description of Russia
The Soviet Union fell in 1991 and now we have the Russian Federation. Russia has had some problems over the years with leaders and especially human rights. Here are some examples of human rights violations.
The Glasnost Defense Foundation
The Glasnost Defense Foundation is an organization that defends journalists, journalism, and the freedom of expression in Russia. The foundation records all individual cases of journalist's rights violations in Russia. The map above shows press freedom in Russia. Map Key: The green is quite free, but the red is not free. Also, the orange is not quite free.
SOVA Center
SOVA Center is a Moscow-based Russian organization that started in October 2002. SOVA does research on nationalism and racism, religion, and finally human rights. They have three main projects: Misuse of Anti-Extremism Legislation, Racism and Xenophobia, and Religion in Secular Society. SOVA publishes print reports in Russian, and also has a website in Russian and English.
Chechnya Advocacy Network
The Chechnya Advocacy Network is an organization that does research on Chechnya and the Chechen people. Chechnya is located in Russia. The goals of the organization is to improve human rights in that area, to end the armed violence there, and to end racial discrimination against ethnic Chechens.
Conclusion
There are many other organizations and groups in Russia that try to get their human rights back. There are many problems and issues that the Russian people are dealing with. Hopefully these organizations can help the Russian people get their human rights back.
