Leap Into Literacy
Grade 2
Reading Strategy
Second graders need visual cues and stem systems to assist with comprehension skills. For example, asking questions before, during and after reading can help readers gain a deeper understanding of the text. Encourage students to use their background knowledge, as well as information from the text, to think about possible answers to their questions. Writing Strategy
As you are transitioning from narrative to informational writing, you may find that your students easily confuse the two genres. Help your students jump into a new genre and understand the difference between narrative and informational writing with this anchor chart.
Rate Your Writing
To help Kindergarten students begin to self-assess their writing, create a chart of pictures about the same topic. Add more detail to each picture. Then write a corresponding sentence for each picture. Rate the pictures 1-4. Discuss the qualities of each rating with the students. Invite the students to use the chart to assess their own work.
