Falcon Landing
Our school store – Falcon Landing – is under a lot of construction! Our OS Interior Design students have partnered with Falcon Landing to help our brick-and-mortar store with a makeover. Prep work, painting, and new storage solutions are underway. In the meantime, our Marketing Applications students have been working on designs and creating a Fall Catalog – just in-time for the winter holidays! Orders will be accepted online (please excuse any clunkiness – we are working on a permanent solution). Orders will be available for pickup (free) the week of December 12th-December 16th. More information will be emailed to those with orders.
KC BizFest
BizFest is a four-day intensive life=skills and business techniques training event for LaitnX high school students from immigrant families in the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan area. By attending KC BizFest, students gain entrepreneurial experience, economic literacy, and improved skills in math, reading, writing, and verbal communication while gaining workforce readiness when creating feasible business plans. Additionally, there are scholarship opportunities for those that attend the event. To learn more and apply, please visit the KC BizFest website: https://sites.google.com/view/kc-bizfest/home.
Technology Students of America Competition
Isaac Bledsoe came in 1st in the 3D Engineering challenge and plans to study aerospace/aeronautical engineering in college.
The competition had very strong candidates from the seven high schools competing so this is a very strong showing for our students.

ACT Results
Coming home this week with your student are their Pre ACT results. If your student is a Freshman, they took the Pre ACT 8/9, Sophomore students took the Pre ACT. Attached to this newsletter are samples of those results.
How your score is calculated: Each subject area test is scored on a scale of 1-36. For each test, ACT converts your number of correct answers into a score in that range. Your Composite score is the average of your scores on the four subjects rounded to the nearest whole number. If you leave any test completely blank, that score is reported as two dashes and no Composite score is computed.
Benchmark scores that indicate college readiness (which ACT defines like this: a student earning this score would have at least a 50% chance of earning a B and a 75% chance of earning a C in specific first-year courses in the corresponding subject area):
- English: 18
- Math: 22
- Reading: 22
- Science: 23
Using those numbers, a composite score of 21 would put a student about on track to be college-ready across the board, though you could imagine a set of numbers where students might earn that score and still fall short in certain categories. For what it’s worth, ACT does not have a benchmark composite score (which is why there is no reporting location for college readiness next to the composite score on the results handout).
How much emphasis are colleges placing on ACT scores for admission nowadays?
This is a tricky one. Very few places require the ACT, but it can be an option for automatic admission at many places. If students don’t have an ACT score, they can often get in, but have to sometimes meet stricter GPA requirements. The ACT can be more important for merit scholarship purposes, but even then, more and more colleges are allowing students to use GPA to qualify for this. More and more, the ACT is a great opportunity that can help students gain admission and/or more scholarships, but it’s definitely no longer the single pathway that it once was.
If you have any questions in regard with scoring, please reach out to your counselor and they would be happy to answer any further questions.
