September 2018
Dear Parents and Citizens of the South Union School Community:
Welcome back to a new school year! The summer fun sure goes by so fast and here we are again educating the best and the brightest entering the SU hallways once again. It is such a joy to have children back in school, ready to learn, smiling and happy to be among friends. We sure did miss our students over the summer break and are anxious to get back to teaching and learning.
South Union is a neighborhood school proudly representing generations of families who have sent their children here. We are proud of the fact we care about each child and work diligently to serve the needs of all kids and community members. We believe that are greatest strength is having the support of all of you as we work with students. Thanks, so much as, we continue to earn your trust everyday – we accept this great responsibility with an honor and respect.
We have many exciting things planned for this school year…beginning with our Field Day on September 28. More information will be provided to you as we draw closer to this fun event. In addition, we are looking forward to Parent Conferences, Pop Corn days, and school pride and spirit days.
As always, we appreciate the opportunity to educate your child. Thank you for believing in SU, the community, and us. We are all in this together so that our students are successful and safe every day of the school year. Please contact us any time with your ideas, comments, suggestions, time, and willingness to help us get better. We are looking forward to having a great school year. All aboard as I welcome you on this educational journey of fun, thrills, and appreciation for all.
Warmest regards,
Dr. Bill Szakacs

Introducing Julie Plant
“Every child deserves a champion: an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists they become the best they can possibly be.” –Rita Pierson, Educator
Everyday my goal is to make the students at South Union believe they have someone in their corner as they expand their learning and take on changing their world. My name is Julie Plant, I am a native Iowan, growing up in rural Winterset. I graduated and left home with hopes of learning more about our world. I have lived in 6 states, teaching in all of them, and returned to Iowa 2 years ago because my husband and I were ready to make the farm home. I am a wife, a mother of 5 children, a former foster mom to 20+ children and have a passion for public education with this being my 19th year serving in a public school.

Everybody Wins Iowa
WHEN YOU READ WITH A CHILD, EVERYBODY WINS!
Everybody Wins Iowa is a one on one reading and mentoring program sponsored by the United Way of Central Iowa. Once a week, participating students read and engage in conversation over lunch with a community volunteer. Everybody Wins Iowa serves over 650 children in 30 schools within central Iowa. South Union is lucky to be one of those 30 schools. For more than 12 years our school has been participating in this program. This year about 45 students in 2nd, 3rd and 5th grades will have the opportunity to be a part of this rewarding program. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact Everybody Wins Iowa at www.everybodywinsiowa.org
