Principal's Greeting
Greetings Viking Family,
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! I am proud to have the opportunity to continue serving the Viking family as the principal of Crestridge International Studies and Dual Language Magnet. The Crestridge staff and I are excited to welcome our incoming kindergarteners to our family and have our scholars in 1st grade through 5th grade return. At Crestridge, we are family centered, and I am confident that each member of our family will do what is needed in order to make this school year a success.
Reopening during a pandemic has required significant and thorough planning and preparation. Although we know that this school year is going to look a little different from what we're used to, our commitment to high levels of learning and safety remain the same. The staff and I have worked tirelessly to ensure we have a thoughtfully designed plan to open safely and responsibly. We have used the safety guidance of the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the safety guidance of Omaha Public Schools in rebuilding our schoolwide systems to prioritize the safety and well being of our students and our staff. Our goal is to prioritize safety while building a sense of calm and normalcy for our students. A thank you in advance to our parents for your partnership and for taking time to practice social distancing, wearing face coverings, and hand washing with your children. Our ability to reduce transmission and remain open will be a collective effort and will call us all to make choices that are in the best interest of the students, families, and staff at Crestridge. Below in the section labeled School Safety, I will share our plan for reopening.
Additionally, I want to thank the many families who reached out during our spring distance learning experience and those families who shared time with me this summer to discuss their distance learning experience. Your input is appreciated and valued. With your input in mind, I believe our team has refined our learning plan to provide families with a predictable structure for learning in the current 3:2 model and in the event that remote learning is needed, I believe we are better prepared. I will also share details below for this plan in the section labeled Supporting Learning At- Home. While families are asked to stay home when ill, attendance will take place for both in person and online learning. Additionally, grading practices will resume for the 2020-2021 school year.
We look forward to continuing to support teaching and learning practices that have led to a tradition of academic excellence at Crestridge. I look forward to partnering with staff, students, and families to prepare our students to responsible citizens who are globally-minded. We are so looking forward to when your students will join us!
If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out. Email me at valerie.varas@ops.org and I'll be sure to respond to you as quickly as possible. At the bottom of this electronic newsletter is a form entitled Family Voice Survey that seeks to learn parents questions, concerns, and to hear parent input. I look forward to serving the Crestridge community during the 2020-2021 school year.

After they get their breakfast, they will proceed to class. If not eating breakfast, they will enter through the front doors and go directly to class.
Families with more than one child may come during either of the scheduled times to allow older siblings to assist as needed. We are asking our families' assistance in coming at your scheduled time. This will ensure that we have adequate staffing to support our students in maintaining safety guidelines.
Dismissal
We are asking parents' cooperation with our curbside pick-up procedures for the 2020-2021 school year. With our new procedures, all parents should remain in their car and pull up into designated pick-up areas as indicated below. Dismissal will also follow a staggered schedule. Parking along Leavenworth Road and in the stalls on Crestridge road will not be allowable for the 2020-2021 school year. All students will be loaded curbside by a Crestridge staff member. Parents are asked to display signs with students names and grade levels during dismissal. These signs will be provided during the School supply pick-up on August 7th. We are asking all parents to display your provided signs for the first month of school.
As we all adjust to this process dismissal will take longer initially, however as time goes on we anticipate dismissal process will become smoother and take less time. Thank you in advance for your patience.

Talking to Your Student about COVID-19
CDC has created recommendations to help adults have conversations with children about COVID-19 and ways they can avoid getting and spreading the disease.
Children may worry about themselves, their family, and friends getting ill with COVID-19. Parents, family members, school staff, and other trusted adults can play an important role in helping children make sense of what they hear in a way that is honest, accurate, and minimizes anxiety or fear.
Tips for talking to children
- Remain calm. Remember that children will react to both what you say and how you say it. They will pick up cues from the conversations you have with them and with others.
- Reassure children that they are safe. Let them know it is okay if they feel upset. Share with them how you deal with your own stress so that they can learn how to cope from you.
- Make yourself available to listen and to talk. Let children know they can come to you when they have questions.
- Avoid language that might blame others and lead to stigma.
- Pay attention to what children see or hear on television, radio, or online. Consider reducing the amount of screen time focused on COVID-19. Too much information on one topic can lead to anxiety.
- Provide information that is truthful and appropriate for the age and developmental level of the child. Talk to children about how some stories on COVID-19 on the Internet and social media may be based on rumors and inaccurate information. Children may misinterpret what they hear and can be frightened about something they do not understand.
- Teach children everyday actions to reduce the spread of germs. Remind children to wash their hands frequently and stay away from people who are coughing or sneezing or sick. Also, remind them to cough or sneeze into a tissue or their elbow, then throw the tissue into the trash.
- If school is open, discuss any new actions that may be taken at school to help protect children and school staff.
Facts about COVID-19 to discuss with children
Try to keep information simple and remind them that health are working hard to keep everyone safe and healthy.
What is COVID-19?
- COVID-19 is the short name for “coronavirus disease 2019.” It is a new virus. Scientists and doctors are still learning about it.
- Recently, this virus has made a lot of people sick. Scientists and doctors are trying to learn more so they can help people who get sick.
- Doctors and health experts are working hard to help people stay healthy.
What can I do so that I don’t get COVID-19?
You can practice healthy habits at home, school, and play to help protect against the spread of COVID-19.
What happens if you get sick with COVID-19?
- COVID-19 can look different in different people. For many people, being sick with COVID-19 would be a little bit like having the flu. People can get a fever, cough, or have a hard time taking deep breaths. Most people who have gotten COVID-19 have not gotten very sick. Only a small group of people who get it have had more serious problems.
- If you do get sick, it doesn’t mean you have COVID-19. People can get sick from all kinds of germs. What’s important to remember is that if you do get sick, the adults at home will help get you any help that you need.

Hello from Miss Rowland, the school counselor at Crestridge and welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year! We have missed our students and look forward to welcoming each of your children back soon.
I know this continues to be a challenging time for EVERYONE for many different reasons. I want to help ensure that the social/emotional needs of our students are being met the best I can. If parents and students would like to reach out to me and talk, even on at- home learning days, we can do that via email and phone.
Additionally, I want to make you aware of some resources that are available to students, families and staff of the Omaha Public Schools in order to help us all stay safe and healthy.
OPS has health information and resources available on the district web page. https://district.ops.org/DEPARTMENTS/GeneralFinanceandAdministrativeServices/DistrictCommunications/HealthUpdates.aspx

Finally, I am always happy to support our Viking family. To reach me to schedule an appoint or to learn of community resources throughout the school year, please email me at heather.rowland@ops.org or you can call or text me at 402-807-5799. I will not always be available right away so if you are experiencing an emergency please call 911 or the Safe hotline mentioned above.
I look forward to my continued work with our Crestridge families for the 17th year in a row.
Fondly,
Miss Rowland-Crestridge Counselor

Supporting At-Home Learning
Common Expectations for At- Home Learning with 3/2 Family Plan (asynchronous)
From the closure last spring, we learned from families that:
1- A common communication and academic platform was critical
2- Common and predictable patterns for what students would be working on were helpful
As a result of this input, we have created a schoolwide plan for at- home learning. All schoolwide communication will be sent through ClassDojo. For the 2020-2021 school year, agendas will not be used. The learning platform that has been selected schoolwide is Seesaw. Classroom teachers will use this platform for both in-person and all at-home learning activities. This platform will also be used to support with student led conferences this fall.
To build cohesion schoolwide and to provide predictability for families on at- home learning days, the following types of activities will be shared by Monday at 9AM for students to complete during their assigned days for learning at home. Getting to know you activities will be shared on August 11th to acquaint students and families with ClassDojo and Seesaw. Content related activities will begin being pushed out the week of Monday, Aug. 17th. Please check both of these apps daily.
Schoolwide At-Home Learning Activities
Reading:
- Students will listen to all assigned core reading selections (4-5 stories)
- 1 Reading A-Z book will be assigned
- Once ipads are received, an I Read activity will be assigned
- HMH Learning Cards
Science/Social Studies
- Students will be assigned a video related to upcoming content
- Students will complete a grade level appropriate response or activity
Math
- Students will be assigned one content related video
- One math activity tied to content
- Students will be assign one district provided video to support with recovery standards
Writing:
- Students will be assigned 2 writing activities a week tied to Language Arts content. This will include activities from their Writer’s Notebook, Know it Show it activities, or grammar practice

PTO News
Hi, Crestridge Family,
Welcome back to school!
In every way, this school year is going to look and feel different for us all—teachers, administrators, staff, students, parents, caregivers, and PTO. But, with disruptive change comes opportunity: While the PTO will need to pivot from some of the traditional ways we’ve interacted with the Crestridge community in the past, we plan to introduce some new ideas and initiatives, sensitive to the current challenge, to continue to engage and support our Viking community.
What we hope doesn’t change is the confidence that Crestridge’s PTO is here for you, for teachers, and for students.
Please join us for our first PTO meeting of the 2020-2021 academic year, to be held virtually on August 17 at 5:30 PM. While the 2020-2021 PTO Calendar is likely to still be a work in progress by then, we’d love to connect with you to kick off the school year, share what we have planned, and, importantly, hear your opinions on how the PTO can best support the Crestridge community in the coming year. Please also feel free to send your thoughts and ideas in advance to crestridgepto@gmail.com.
