What is Shrove Tuesday?
It all begins with Mardi Gras, literally “Fat Tuesday” or “Shrove Tuesday” but commonly known as Pancake Day! This is the last day before the period which Christians call Lent and it is traditional on this day to eat pancakes.
Why are Pancakes eaten on Shrove Tuesday?
Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving up. So Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge and to use up the foods that are not allowed during Lent. Pancakes are eaten on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs which were forbidden during Lent.
When is Shrove Tuesday celebrated?
Shrove Tuesday is celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday and is therefore the final day before the commencement of Lent, leading up to Easter Sunday. Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday.
In recognition of this event, the Madonna Parent Council will be providing and preparing the food and special guests will be serving all the students and staff on Tuesday, February 25.
