JBD Friday Focus
September 13, 2019
From the Principal:
Hello Parents and Guardians of the most amazing children in Virginia Beach!
We were so excited to see so many of you at OPEN HOUSES this week. How fun it is for your children to show you what they are doing and for you to meet their teachers. Hopefully, you left feeling as if your children are in good hands and in a place that will foster learning every day.
It is our goal to work with you to help your child thrive every day at John B. Dey. Please know that your children may not be totally thrilled or love every single moment of every day. That's the real world, right? It is obviously easier to hang around super happy children, give into everything they want, and try to fix every obstacle in their way. However, reality is, without struggle, there is no growth. It's okay to let kids cry, be mad, be sad, and learn to deal with life's disappointments. Each problem or challenge that they overcome on their own will set them up for future success in their adult life.
Our classrooms are personalized and teachers work with the children in regards to their strengths, differentiate according to their needs, and plan for their hurdles. It has been so exciting to see so many of our former students that have gone on to middle school who say they felt truly prepared and ready to tackle whatever they had to in order to meet with success. That is a tribute to the parents, as their first and most important teachers, along with our partnership in the learning of every child. Great teamwork makes the dreamwork for every JBD Seagull!
Thanks again for your support. A shout out to Lauren Kirkpatrick and the PTA group for being her with us for all three Open Houses. If you haven't had a chance to join the PTA, please do so. It will be the best $5.00 you have ever spent.
Enjoy the weekend and please know, that I am always hear to listen or assist with any concerns or even compliments! We love to hear about the good things going on in the school from the parent perspective.
All the best,
Beth Bianchi

Reflections:
Does your student enjoy art, music, or dance or have an interest in writing, producing films and taking photos? Then join us and have fun unleashing his or her inner artist with PTA Reflections! This year’s theme, “Look Within,” calls for their own unique interpretation through the arts. Look over the guidelines and print out an entry form today! Please read carefully over the rules for your category. Entries can be brought to school and dropped off in the office any time before the end of school on Oct. 4th. We will celebrate the contestants’ work on October 24th with a ceremony at JBD.
Volunteer of the Month:
Teri Miller, teacher appreciation chairperson, planned a very special back to school luncheon for teachers. Thank you for your continued support, Teri!
Have a passion for volunteering? PTA is a worthwhile organization and we would love for you to join us! Contact PTA President Lauren Kirkpatrick at jbdptapresident@gmail.com for more information.
GIFTED CORNER
Sept. 30 (Mon.): All 5th graders will be screened by the gifted program. Results will be posted on Parent Portal/Parent Vue+ by mid-November, giving fresh scores to those already identified and information to possibly identify others WITH AN APPLICATION. Students scoring in the top 10% are highly encouraged to apply to the gifted program, if they are not already identified. Any child exhibiting gifted tendencies may apply as this screening evaluates only one aspect of gifted thinking; some students will perform better on the other tests.
Applications* are due Jan. 10, 2020, 4:00 PM. See the FAQs sheet that will come home with your child just prior to screening for more information.
