Digital Footprints and Digital Citizens
A Digital Footprint is a “trail” that is made of bits and pieces of information on someone's computer, on other computers, or servers around the world. A Digital Citizen is someone who is able to think critically about the ethical opportunities and challenges of the “digital world” and make safe, responsible, respectful choices. It is important to have a positive profile online because most collages and jobs look at your profiles and if they see a lot of things that a negative things that could risk your chances of getting into that collage or getting the job. And when you put things online they never go away they follow you for the rest of your life. Think before you post
It is important to have good internet safety. Internet safety is being safe on the internet. Its important that you don't put personal information like your phone number or your address online. Just as you would stay away for strangers on the street, be careful about strangers on the internet.
Viruses and Worms
Viruses are a segment self replicating code planted illegally in a computer program often to damage or shutdown a system or network. Worms exploit security software to multiply in machines. Both of these things can ruin you computer so it is importan to get and update anti-virus software regularly.
Password Protection and Hackers
It is important that you have good password protection because if you don't then hackers might hack into your profiles. A hacker is a computer user who attempts to steal unauthorized access to a computer. Your password should be at least 21 characters long or longer, have symbols, combinations of uppercase and lowercase letter, and numbers. The more complicated the less of a chance a hacker will hack into your account.
TIPS FOR PARENTS
- If you have a computer in your house its good to keep it in a high traffic area.
- Establish limits for what websites your kids can and can't go on.
- If a child uses e-mail or chat, you should consider talking to them about what to do and not to do if they meet a person they don't know on the internet.
- Talk to children about not responding to dangerous emails or other communications
