THE ARROW
Edition #27 l March 5, 2021
Enjoy Spring Break!
This is it - the last big break before the final push through the rest of the 2020-21 school year! We highly encourage you to take this next week to complete unplug, relax, and unwind.
There are all sorts of academic studies that prove the benefits of a break every now and then. These moments of rest give you the chance to let your brain recharge, and your social and emotional batteries to be refilled. Please take advantage of this time to reconnect with what makes you feel like "you" - play a video game, go for a walk, go fishing, read a book, play a board game, or binge watch your favorite TV show. Whatever it is that you love doing on your free time, jump into it headfirst this week! We'll hit the ground running on the other side of spring break, and it'll be graduation before you know it!
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) held a statewide conference call on Thursday, March 4, to discuss Governor Abbott’s Executive Order 34. Community ISD will continue to require masks be worn by students age 10 or older, as well as staff members, for at least the two weeks after Spring Break. The Community ISD Board of Trustees will then consider a decision on whether to continue requiring masks in the first week of April.
Community ISD has chosen this two-week period after thorough study of COVID-19 data across the country. Usually new infections of COVID-19 spike after a break period, as they did after Thanksgiving and the Winter Break. This two-week period will provide adequate time to monitor our case numbers and make an informed decision on the risk of future outbreaks. If new cases are minimal, then the CISD board of trustees may address the mask mandate in the first week of April.
For now, we must continue to follow TEA’s mandate, which in part states that, “Schools must comply with the following requirements: Every student, teacher, or staff member shall wear a mask over the nose and mouth when inside a school building, school facility, facility used for school activities, or when in an outdoor space on school property or used for school activities, wherever it is not feasible to maintain six feet of social distancing from another person not in the same household …”
However, these regulations also state that, “The governing board of a school system may modify or eliminate by formal action the above mask-related requirements.” Because of this guidance from TEA, masks must continue to be worn unless our Board of Trustees files a formal action with the state.
Please enjoy your Spring Break safely and responsibly, and be prepared to wear masks for at least two weeks when you return to campus. We look forward to finishing the 2020-21 school year on a positive note!
