Aiming to Keep You Informed

August 28, 2020

From the Office

We are very excited for the start of the new year and look forward to seeing all students on Monday, August 31st!

Meet the Teacher

Today, all teachers reached out to their classes via email. Included in the email were links to videos designed to help students get to know their teacher. If you would like to access these video messages, please use this link: Meet the Teacher Parents, please assist students with checking their email and following any guidance provided by teachers in preparation for the first day of school on Monday, August 31st. Thank you!

Attendance Procedures

Students are required to attend each class on their schedule every day. Attendance will be taken by teachers and recorded in PowerSchool. Parents, we ask that you call the Main Office and report any class period absences, including full day absences and Doctor appointments that require only partial absences, similar to a normal school year. Thank you!

Student Supply Pick-up

It was really nice to see everyone at Supply Pick-up yesterday. We apologize for the Chromebook password error. Hopefully, you received a follow-up email from the Technology Department with corrected Login information. If not, please contact the Main Office and we will connect you to the Technology department or use the link to request Technology Support

If you were unable to attend Supply Pick-up, please call the front office at 630-529-6211 to schedule a time to stop by the school.

Early Release Wednesdays

Starting on Wednesday, September 9th, District 13 will follow an early release schedule on every other Wednesday. Students will attend all 9 periods at Westfield, with reduced minutes per class, and be dismissed at 1:40pm. An official Early Release Schedule will be shared next week with all students and parents.

Future Supply Pick-ups

Throughout the year, teachers may have items that students will find useful to have at home. We are looking at possibly using some Early Release Wednesdays to schedule Supply Pick-up times. Once plans are finalized, we will communicate exact dates and times.

Acceleration Period

Acceleration period is a time designed for teachers to support individual student needs. All students are assigned to a Home Room for Acceleration. With a few exceptions, such as 1st period 8th Grade Spanish, students will not always remain with the same staff member throughout the period or the year. Our Specialists use this period to connect with students on a periodic basis. If your child is offered the opportunity to work with one of our Specialists, Westfield staff will communicate that with you and your child.

During Remote Learning, we are going to offer something new during the Acceleration period this year. We are calling it "Office Hours". For students who do not need to be in a specific program, they will have the opportunity to meet with teachers of their choice to review material. Office Hours will take place during the scheduled Acceleration period for students and teachers will be accessible the entire time during Office Hours. Next week, teachers will share more details with their classes regarding the procedures for Office Hours.

Westfield Communication

This year, more than ever, communication between school and home will be essential. Our goal is to communicate effectively and efficiently with you. We will try to package our communication in the Arrow and include links to grade level newsletters to keep you informed. We will also communicate regularly via social media platforms; follow us on Twitter and Instagram @D13Warriors (there a buttons at the bottom of the Arrow to take you to those pages) Additionally, please refer to the school google calendar for school wide dates and information.

Student Expectations for Remote Learning

Please reference our Student Handbook for general policies and procedures. We would also like all students to reference the Virtual Etiquette for Google Meets infographic to assist students with Remote Learning expectations.

A message for 6th graders:

Welcome to Westfield! Your 6th-grade teachers are really excited to meet you! Whether you are coming from DuJardin, Ericson, or another school, you are all Warriors now. Every year the 6th-grade teachers work hard to help ease your transition into middle school and create a community. This year will be a little different, but remember we are all going to work together to make it a success. We know you may be anxious about meeting new teachers, new classmates, and learning new expectations. We will help you through it all! The first few days will be spent getting acquainted. You will get to know the teachers and what we expect, the teachers will get to know you and what you need, and you will get to know all of your new classmates. If you are nervous, don’t worry, we will all be patient with you, and we will ask you to be patient with us too. We are all doing new things this year, but we will figure it out together! We will share more with you next week. See you soon!
